Any ideas on why a gauge might be reading wrong- thought my boat was using a lot of gas until I discovered gauge is about a qtr tank off- fill it up and reads full - after about an hour- really stops to drop - gets down to 1/4, picks up and reads pretty much dead on. This is a 2007 pontoon with a 30 gal tank hooked to 115 outboard yamaha- air in lines/tank maybe???

Might be a bad sending unit in the gas tank (float sticking) Change the sending unit out and see what happens. Cheap and easy to do. Don't pay a mechanic $150.00 to do this.

$150.00 sounds like a bargain to me! Sending unit cost about $30.00 +/-. And, to handle all that fuel, and make adjustments to the unit so that it gives you ACCURATE readings! Clearly UNLIKE what Roosters results are at the moment. Entire job, depending on how accessable the tank is will take an hour or so. Welcome to the world of Ethonal. And indeed most parts houses will carry a universal sending unit. Pontoon.... "Just sayin". ;)

thanks to all. My dad always said " a little knowledge is dangerous",so with my little knowledge, think I will foot the bill for someone else to do the testing and replacement. Fortunately, my tank is real easy to get to everything, so the mechanic will not have a problem along those lines. Unless the gas station and marina is lying, ethanol has not been a factor. Have a great weekend everyone.

I saw on the internet that if you pull the sending unit half way out of the fuel tank and immediatly heat that coil with a lighter, that everything will be calibrated - what could possibly go wrong? Can't see where I would need anything other than a case of Miller Lite and a lighter - about $18.00 in supplies. Why would I want to pay a mechanic? ;-)
