I suspect it has to do with a thought along the line of messing with the other team.  I rather doubt a pitcher would need this to see the signs better.  If he did, I don't want to be one of his batters.

But dang, don't ya know that catcher has gotta be taking a bunch of gaff for it.

I don't think this is peculiar to Boston. The Mets are doing the same thing. Used pink on breast cancer day.

I think it is pretty common, has replaced taping a finger to provide clearer signals.
