They shot down his plane.  I guess that's a better way to go versus plutonium poisoning.  I think the message here is very clear, Putin is still in charge and any opposition will be dealt with the KGB way.  What Prigozihn thought flying back into Russia is anyone's guess.  But it was clearly a suicide mission.
