Got a older 2 stroke Mercury 60hp down on power. Already replaced the plugs and initially that fixed the problem for 3/4 of the day and then back down on power. Almost feels like its down a cylinder. I checked for fire on the plug wires and seems to be firing from the shock I got!!! Also starting to small fuel. Figure that's from being down on power. Idles just fine. Any suggestion much appreciated. Putting a damper on our beach trip.

Someone just gave me a 1997 Mercury 75HP.  Looks like the top cylinder has 90# compression.

90# cylinder runs intermittantly.

Cylinder wear likely from no lube.  No lube likely from no fuel/oil delivery.  No fuel/oil delivery likely from clogged carb.

Clogged carb likely from ethanol.

Buy a compression gauge and test all cylinders.  Below 100-110# needs rebuild.

Replace the fuel pump diaphrams on the manual fuel pump.  They are probably leaking back into the crank case.

Completed the replacement on the fuel pump diaphragms. Enjoyed learning how to do this job but unfortunately it did not solve my problem. Still down on power.

Time to call Steve and make an appointment. Sounds like you need to get if fixed by Cathouse Marine at 334-517-6500.

Wonder if the fuel pickup in the tank is restricted?????

Doesn't seem to be a fuel restriction due to the smell of fuel. I purchased another round of spark plugs to run again. As another observation. The 3rd or bottom plug appears to have some fluid on it. Will update after another run at it today. Agree, it's about time to hand it over to a pro.

If getting shocked from a plug wire changed how the motor ran and you got shocked touching it, plug wires may be shorting to ground.

You could start it at night and use a clean wood or plastic stick to move the wires (especially away from metal) and see what happens.

Solution may be to replace plug wires.

Compression test revealed bad #1 cyclinder. So time for a rebuild. The boat and motor are over 20 years old so all the value is in my love for it. Due to the cost I will attempt to rebuild myself. I will appreciate and accept any technical support. I know I will have many questions along the way.

If the rings are dirty and stuck to the piston, try Yamaha Ring-free.  Amazon has it.

I would try that before tear down.

Well, is it running?

Yes, it is running. I rebuilt it myself. Took me about 2 months. Learned a lot. Thanks for following up.

Yes, but replaced all the bearings.

Congratulations.  Saved money, learned a skill, instilled a bit of self pride. Win win win.
