Ok guys...I know we (by we I mean me :) ) have spent most of the recent years concerned about not enough water but this weekend looks interesting. We are very near full pool and the forecast is calling for up to five inches of rain in already saturated areas including our watershed. It has been forever since we had a rain event like this when we were not in already dry conditions.
Oldtimers, my lake history is only about 25 years old (the parts I can remeber well) what should we expect?? Will water run "over the dam"?? I realize the flood gates will be used...could the lake really flood?? Has it ever happened?? I am heading down to watch...i think what we have is a more normal weather pattern that "feels" very wet so help jar my memory...thanks!

Appears that the turbines have been running since 5 am in preparation for the rain. I've heard 3-4 inches by Saturday, there will be some delay for the rain in the watershed to reach the lakes. These guys are pros, my bet is that the actual level may change a foot or so, but not go over 489.5. Any takers?

Yep...I saw that they were running the turbines in preparation. If we get five inches I will take your bet...its been a long time since we have had that kind of rain with already saturated ground and relatively full water tables...I bet she goes to 491 if so...

It promises to be alot of rain. Opening flood gates is not a desired option. Glad I don't have that job.

Not what we need. If we do get six inches, raise the level above full, or release it downstream, will not help for any variance in the future. They may resort to using the lake as a resevoir flood control.

Lakngulf...so what you are saying is that in times of drought we have to worry about keeping water in the lake and in times of rain we need to worry about keeping water in the lake :) Got it! Consider me back on the Worry Train :) Said in jest of course...

the Lake was full, and it rained buckets for several days, then several tornadoes on the ground buzzed thru from SW to NE across Parker Creek to the River bridge. Extensive damage to many cabins/boats.
At that time we did not have access to hourly lake level info, but the water did come higher than 490, maybe 491,492, enough to cover a low seawall and up into the yard on a very flat lot.
My concern this weekend will not be for my cabin, but for the floating dock getting above the anchor posts and escaping.
Feast or famine, huh?

I remember that year. many people had built their docks a little below 490'. When the water level went over the deck boards, it actually pulled some poles up a few inches. And the ones that had floating docks with poles attached to the fixed pier really had problems. If they have to open all of the flood gates and it's not still raining, drive to the Hwy 50 bridge. It's an awsome sight.

I don't remember the year, but it was a LONG TIME AGO...it rained and rained...1978/79. Heard the turbines were full open on Martin Dam. Drove to the dam on Highway 50 and walked on the bridge, looked at the churning water, and walked back to the road...about 30 seconds later the Highway 50 bridge washed out...

At 11:00 a.m., the level peaked at 490.88. That was the first time 490 had been reached in four years, and it hasn't come close to 490.88 since.
