I am 99 % sure it is not venomaous. It may be a rat snake. Is it in water? I'll look it up and get back with you on the ID.

It's a Midland Water Snake, probably the most common snake around the lake. Believe it or not, they get bigger than three feet long. (And, the bigger it gets, the better for you. Snakes like this are territorial and have nasty tempers, and they will usually fight off any venomous Water Moccasins that want to share the same area.)
If it's too near an area of heavy activity, it will eventually leave on its own. So for now, enjoy it. Sit quietly in the morning and watch it stalk and catch minnows, and enjoy knowing that, as long as its around, Water Moccasins are not.

Is that REALLY a map of Lake Martin on your shower? Or is that just "fun with digital photos" stuff?
I'd be interested to know how, who, and how much.
Thanks

Last Saturday as I got off my boat I almost stepped onto a 3' cottonmouth sunning himself on my dock. Scared me, but didn't phase him at all. He sat there daring me to move... and was still there waiting when I came back with a hoe. He now lives with the angels.

Good call BAJ! The pictures of the Midland from various websites are pretty consistent with this one. I was surprised at the number of species of water snakes out there. But like most snakes, if you leave them alone they'll do likewise.

True snake haters won't like this but the southern king snake is native to the area. King snakes eat other snakes. I pay a local guy who loves to snake hunt $10.00 for a nice big king snake. We had a problem (I apologize to the leave 'm aloners) with copperheads colonizing in our neighborhood. The copperheads had been so bold as to sun themselves in driveways and on sidewalks. After fours years of kids getting scared and a couple of bites I talked the neighbors into not killing some locally rangled kingsnakes. Haven't seen a copperhead in over three years. I will occasionally see one of the king snakes slithering through the garden.

... we too have a heck of a problem with copperheads here where I live. Bringing in king snakes is a great solution. Now to find somebody who can bring us some kings snakes ....
