Suggestions for a non-traditional T'giving meal?

Our family is not a big fan of the traditional roasted turkey Thanksgiving meal, especially the leftovers that seem to last forever. We have tried deep fried and that was OK, but once the boys left to go back to school it got old fast. Last year I smoked a whole rib-eye. It was very good and everyone liked it. We could go that route again, but I'm always looking for something new. For Christmas we had Shrimp and Grits, another hit. Any ideas?

My alternates are Standing Rib Roast &Leg of Lamb.
But the most spectacular is a Cassoulet. It's a layered affair with meat, sausage, white beans as the consistent content. If you are a duck hunter there are lots of recipes for that too. The classic French Cassoulet is too complex for me - anything Julia Child did usually is. But here's one that will give you a feel for it. This one is similar in take to the Julia Child recipe but not as complex.

I did this one years ago for a Christmas dinner. It's from the New Basics cookbook if you have it. I think I sustituted a hen for the duck. It was outstanding - and it's quite a bit of work but you'll get applause.

Our first Thanksgiving not at my Mom's home with the traditional stuff, that took hours and days to prepare and 20 minutes to eat. We will be on Panama City Beach and I am going to enjoy at least one dozen on the half shell and a platter of fried Grouper , puppies, coleslaw and fries with beer. If no restaurants open on Thursday we'll have boiled shrimp and wait to Friday for the fish. How bout that??

You should grill the shrimp if you go that route, leave that boiled stuff for those times when you want to eat in two minutes... If nothing else, help the Chinese economy and buy a cheap grill, stay at the motel and use olive oil and Old Bay to marinate the shrimp and beer to marinate the chef. :-)

We always get several pounds of shrimp for a week. Boil some and refrigerate it for lunch/snacks or a meal. Get some jumbo's, thread them on some sticks, coat with a sweet and sour marinade, sprinkle with Toni's, and fire them up on the barby. Avocado/purple onion salad, brown rice with pepper jack cheese, hot buttered sourdough bread. Kendall Jackson Reserve Chardonnay. ,,,,,, Mercy.

You are a devout smoker, but do you use a grill? If so, consider. Grilled Pork Loin Roast (yeah, RoswellRick is rolling his eyes at the Pork again)
Sweet Potato Casserole Veggies (corn on the cob? butter beans, fried green tomatoes if they were in season) Whole Pork Loin- about 6 or 7 pounds (Sam's has some good ones) Inject with a mix of Butter/garlic/balsamic vinegar. Bag and marinate overnite. Pat dry. Coat lightly with olive oil. Rub liberally with your favorite rub (Toni's for me) Set aside for 1 hour at room temp. Light grill for a 2 zone cook. Grill the loin hot, hot on all sides until chocolate brown. Move it to the cool zone with a temp probe. Cook covered until @ 165/175*.
Sweet Potato Casserole- Fits in a 9x13 oven dish. 6 large sweet potatoes. Nuke em' till tender. Cool. Peel. Cull the hard ends. Mash in a large bowl. Add 1 cup sugar, 1 cup milk, 1 stick melted butter, 2 beaten eggs, 1 tsp. vanilla and blend with mixer. Pour into buttered casserole dish. Topping- 1 cup chopped pecans. 1 cup brown sugar. 1/2 cup flour. 1/2 cup melted butter. Blend. Spread over casserole evenly. Bake at 350* for @ 30 minutes until crunchy top and bubbling.

The standing rib roast sounds like a great option. The cassoulet sounds interesting, but lots of work and I'm not sure the boy would like the lamb and duck.

I would love some fresh seafood, but it's a 10 hour drive to PC and there is no fresh available in Cookeville TN. :-(

Well, the bosses (my three boys) have spoken. It will be another smoked prime rib with mashed potatoes, green beans, mac and cheese, broccoli, and creamed corn. Can you say carb loading? Thanks for all the suggestions, but the boys won this round. Christmas is coming though!
