I've been trying for a couple of days now to come up with an answer to this question:
"How does one operate a 40 or 50 foot powerboat 'politely' on an inland lake?"
And I keep coming back to the same, single answer:
"At idle speed only."
How many of them do that?
Pass the bill.
It's time for the "look at me" crowd to get back to the beach.

I don't even understand that. Let's try this from Webster:
2 a : showing or characterized by correct social usage b : marked by an appearance of consideration, tact, deference, or courtesy c : marked by a lack of roughness or crudities <polite literature>
I don't see Idle speed anywhere in that.....

I see nothing confusing about this post. If someone swamps you with their behemoth boat, and then says "Oops, I'm so sorry!" are you any less swamped?! We have had a number of posts where the basic argument is that we are nice people who have these oversized boats. That may be true, but the oversized boats is the basic problem. Being nice will help a little, but the wake is too much regardless of the temperament of the driver. Take them to the Gulf where they belong!!!!

ok, here are the facts..... and the facts are just that......the facts and the law and the fact is these boats belong wherever they are not outlawed to be and that currently in at LAKE MARTIN......deal with it!

That's true. But it is also a fact that there is consideration of outlawing large boats, and that is what the discussion is about. Can you deal with that?

i'm dealing with it but until it is a law you can do one of 4 things..... 1 - continue to whine and moan about it 2 - avoid it and not go to the lake 3 - buy a bigger boat 4- or DEAL WITH IT!

try changing the subject again; this is worse than watching a Catholic and Baptist arguing over who is a better Christian. Neither will win, but each will always "believe" they are right.

The term swamped has been used alot, in the last few days on this forum. I am an old timer and been around rivers and lakes all my life. The people being swamped should take a look around, you may be doing something wrong as well.

After being neutral on this issue for a while I have finally come to a decision. First, there are some people on this forum who shall remain nameless that have a very bad attitude problem. That of which contributes to their support of this bill. Secondly, I think that the issue of size is rational but not logical. It does not matter where you are on the lake if you pass another vessel you will experience some type of a bump over their wake. Boats make wakes .... It's just what they do. As previously stated the laws of physics will tell you that the more boats the more wakes. So in open water it does not neccesarily matter how big the boats are if it is crowded, there will be large waves. I have been on a 18'-20' boat Many times on the lake in the summer and during July 4th weekend and the water was far from intolerable. Third I do not know how many of the readers of this forum look at things but I will tell you that right now I see the lake as half full not half empty (if you know what I mean). Obviously I am in opposition to the bill because I think that it is assenine for legislature to pass regaurding the size and horsepower of boats on the lake. It is the same thing as saying that fully sized trucks and SUV's are not allowed on the road anymore because they take up too much room.

get involved with this but the point on the other side is that yes not like a truck or SUV but more like a dragster or a loaded wide load trailer. The judgement is subjective on both sides and they make good points. The behavior/ courtesy problem is a different issue.
|
But very true.
|
Does that mean a 24' pontoon, a 21' tow boat, a 9' day sailer, and two jetskies will get me 5 tickets to the other place? ...on the other hand, if I drove them all at once, I'd be using 740hp and cursed forever; and if this silly law passes, I may decide to get a good deal on something bigger.
Hey, maybe the boat brokers are behind it.

"Secondly, I think that the issue of size is rational but not logical. It does not matter where you are on the lake if you pass another vessel you will experience some type of a bump over their wake. Boats make wakes .... It's just what they do."
So a boat is a boat, and a wake is a wake? OK, using that kind of logic, a sphere is a sphere. So what you're saying is: if I drop a BB on your head from a height of 10 feet, it will do the same amount of damage as a bowling ball would.
Yeah, that makes sense!
Hare's a fact: bigger boats displace more water, and that creates larger wakes. There are plenty of variables involved, not the least of which is the speed of the boats, but when all other variables are equal, the bigger boats are going to make bigger wakes. That, too, is physics.

I have remained on the sidelines long enough. Why can't you people get along. I'm selling my place on Lake Martin and going back to Lake Lanier where the water is smooth and clean, there is no boat traffic to speak of, and I can hang out with Jim and Roswell's Dawgs. Oh, the humanity of it all.

Appreciate you picking up on the sarcasm Bigfoot. I just hope people on this forum realize what a jewel we have in Lake Martin. Yes, I suppose "progress" is inevitable but , I hope it can be managed in a much more envirionmently friendly way than what I have experienced here on the Georgia lakes. As far as the boat issue, I am legal and I understand the purpose of the bill. However, I have complete empathy with those who spent a lot of money on their previously "legal" boats only to have them declared illegal after the fact. Perhaps they could consider grandfathering boats already purchased. Nah, that'll never work; makes to much sense. Oh well, that's why you will never see my name in Politics. Like my Pappy used to say, "Never get in a pi$$-fight with a skunk, no doubt you will win the pi$$-fight but.......................
