Bad or cracked disturbator cap,. wires, worn distriburator shaft, timing gears or chain. Blown head gasket.

In this case, it was the fuel injector ground wire. The fuel injection system on the Merc EFI batch fires. In other words, 4 injectors fire at the same time. cyl 1 and 3 are on one side of the motor, and 2 and 6 are on the other side. Fuel injectors 1,3,2 and 6 would spray and then 5,7,4 and 8. Although your answers are good ones, here are the grades.

MAYBE THEY WERE VACUUM OPERATED, AND WHEN YOU CHANGED UP THE CAMSHAFT OR INTAKE/CARB THEY LOST VACUUM?

Had 57 chevrolet, ran super stock, cheaten 4 barrel, ran with the best. trieded to run cheaten 2 barrell ,never ran good in that class,would fall on it`s face , Cost me a lot of money and embarresment till I figurated out the problem. then it would schorch the pavement.

happened when you really "stepped on it" - opening the butterfly valve in the carb really dropped the vacumn.
