Can any one tell me why the water level is so low on Lake Weiss?

Because it's maintained (or not maintained) by Alabama Power.

Check out the article in The Post this week...

Despite the article in this week's Post, there is no rational answer that is available.

The Allatoona drainage basin drains into Weiss, plus Weiss gets the runoff from its own basin north and west of  Allatoona.  Allatoona is now officially at flood stage. Go figure.

And the river in Gadsden is over the banks. Something doesn't add up here. There has to be some other agenda. Also, if Weiss is a "storage impoundment" like the Alabama Power notice states, wouldn't they have wanted to bring it up to full level when they could to give them more options in the event of a prolonged dry spell? We are being lied to for some reason.

Alabama Power is just showing us who holds the "power" (no pun intended). Not much we can do when there's nobody to vote out of office, etc.

I can't help but think this has something to do with all of the battles being fought over the easement issue.
The two lakes above Weiss are Allatoona on the Etowah River and Carter's Lake on the Oostanaula River. Allatoona is over full pool and Carter's is just under full pool. The lake directly below Weiss is Lake Neely Henry and it is just under full pool. Clearly, the power's that be are intentionally keeping Weiss way below the others. If we go into an extended drought this summer starting this low already, Weiss will drop to horribly low levels and Alabama Power will be to blame.

And I'm sure their reply will be "so, what are you gonna do about it?". As you pointed out, levels upstream and below Weiss are at or above full pool, yet Weiss is over 2' below full pool. I don't see where there can be any explaination other than somebody picking and chosing where the water goes.

It might just be plain incompetence. APCO has nothing to gain by letting Weiss get so low but the excuses do not add up.

Rome's average rainfall for the last 12 top 18 months is right on the average. That is what the UGA weather records show.

Rain that falls in Rome mostly ends up downstream. Allatoona is officially at flood stage. Not just "high" or "full". Flood Stage. That is up stream of Weiss too. Allatoona dam produces power for the Southeast Power Administration, just like Weiss does for APCO. Allatoona has to release at least enough for Cartersville, GA Power plants at Euharlee and Coosa and the paper plant in Coosa, just like Weiss has some release requirements. Is APCO saying there is  a drought in Cedar Bluff but it is  rain forest conditions in Woodstock, GA?

The "Drought" and the "power demands" might be factors but they do not add up to what is going on. Neither do the statements about.Corp of Engineers demands this and that. Allatoona has similar demands and a much larger taking out of water for the Cobb-Marietta Water Authority.

Maybe the powers that be send the second string to Weiss dam or do not care that 2 feet lower at Weiss represents 1/3 of the way to winter pool, makes the lake dangerous and many docks unusable, while 2 feet at Allatoona is not even noticed. Allatoona is about 1/2 the size of Weiss when Weiss is at full pool. Right now they must be about equal. It pains to drive over Allatoona on I-75 and see the water at the top of the ramps and get to Weiss and see a mud flat.

Maybe some APCO person(s) just screwed up. Soon to be promoted probably.

And even after the heavy rain of the last 24 hours they are already starting to drop the level again. Make no mistake about it. For some reason, they want the level at Weiss to be low.

Is some thing wrong with Weiss Lake water?  Is it contaminated?  What purpose does it serve to keep the water level so low if surrounding lakes are full or at flood stage.  Please bring back the Weiss Lake we all know and love.  It is such a beautiful lake for families to enjoy.  The way the economy is today the lake is an inexpensive form in entertainment for families.
