.22 LRHP and a good spotlight. When shooting armadillas, keep your distance. When the bullet hits the armadilla, they will jump up into the air flippping around like crazy and blood will go everywhere. This is a tip from a friend of mine in Dublin, GA.

had them tear up our place this summer....one cure---find holes, put sakrete in, wet it...they can NOT back up. they go to it--and die.

If you are worried about hurting their feelings---just get used to torn up lawn.

We had them at the lake home and our home in Opelika. We used a combination of traps, 22's, and then TruGreen.  Armadillas eat grubs and the TruGreen armadilla grub treatment killed the grubs. No more armidallos for this year (so far).

woodboat is correct.  Armadillos eat grubs (LOVE them) and any other insects that dwell in the soil.  The best way to deter them is to control the insect population in your yard - not just grassy areas, but areas where leaves and other organic matter settles and stays - mulch, etc.

That beind said, if you shoot one, an armadillo will make a really cool beer holder when it is placed on its back with all four feet in the air!!!  Just shoot, roll it over, place beer between feet!  TEXAS BEER HOLDER!

agreed, we've had them too, for the first time ever. From what I have read, this dry weather has them seeking out new areas, thus all of the yard work. We treat for insects in our lawn but that hasn't stopped the armadillos. My best results have come from 10 PM walks with my 22. Their shells are pretty tough and I think they carry a lot of fat so I would advise to shoot for the head. I am all about being a good steward of the environment and its occupants, but armadillos are not native to this area so I don't feel bad about helping control their population.

Not to go completey gun nerd on y'all... but: 

Find you a Ruger 77/22 with an AWC Ultra II barrel.  Integrally supressed. It's Hollywood quiet.  Let's you get off a couple of extra shots before they have any idea what is going on. 

If you REALLY want to take it to the next level... a thermal optic would be the ticket.

just be careful - have read several stories over the years of ricochets into self as well as bounced through a doorway and injured someone.

I use a old 20 gage, I also live trap them ( not easy)  then shoot them. But the problem is there out sometime after midnight and I can't stay up!

Have no mercy, take no prisoners.  A couple of years after we moved in, we killed 15 one summer.  My wife serves is light spotter and  primary hunter, my job is executioner.  I've thinned the herd over the years and I've found that high power 12 ga. #4 works quite well.  Stops 'em dead in their tracks.  No jumping up in the air and running off to die 100 yds away and stink up the neighborhood, etc.
