Definitely agree with your first sentence. I do leave the option open for an unknown caller to leave a VM, else I might miss an unexpected , yet important call. If you do answer an unknown call and they ask you if they are speaking with (your name),  DO NOT say yes, because they can then patch your "yes" to some other question that commits you to something you never really agreed with. If they ask me "Is this is (my name), I answer with "who is calling?"  That way if it is legit I dont miss it, but if it is bogus I just hang up.
