My family has had a cabin, now house, on this lake since I was a wee tyke, 1961, and I've been all over it many many times since. Yet to this day, I still from time to time read in this forum or elsewhere someone describing a location as such and such bay, slough or area and I have no idea where they mean. I know, or think I do, all the major ones: Big &Little Kowaliga bays, Susannah Slough, the various creeks etc. But when I try to find one with which I'm not familiar online or in maps of the lake, I typically can't. Anyone know of a map that includes all these local names?

I don't think such a map exists, but I certainly agree with you on the many names used for areas on the lake.  With the burglaries happening around the lake now, it would probably help if we all were more specific about pinpointing areas of the lake.  There are about 7,300 homes around the lake and it can get confusing.  My weakness is the area north (west) of the Hwy 63 bridge, so it would help us all for everyone to be as specific as possible, especially when discussing thefts, etc., on the lake.  Posting such information as thefts will help us all be more prepared.

It is a great map for Russell propaganda to show how much they control but is by no means the be all end all for anyone to use, especially locals who know and remember what the common name of many locations/landmarks were before being developed and renamed by RL.  One glaring example is what they have labeled as Glynmere will forever and always be known to my self and many others as Pitchford Hollow and what they are calling Deer Island was always known by myslef and others as "Big Sandy".  Other spots were just not mentioned by any name, i.e. Dunhams Island, Nero Point, Girls Scout Camp etc. etc.

I understand many areas are known by different groups by different names but the ones mentioned above all have map references on other maps.  A truly comprehensive map would be very nice.  There is a map section associated with this site that is interactive and can be edited by forum members.  I haven't checked it out in a while but will soon to see if any progress has been made on it.  The last time I checked it out Bruce was asking for users to label any islands they knew by name.  A searchable map with neighborhood and area names is a great asset.  Lets all get involved and label more spots.  Any area that is disputed could be handled by polling users to determine the 'prevailing name', or providing published map references form other sources.

Not sure about what they refer to as Glynmere, but I find it interesting that the road leading to the top of the slough of the area named "Willow Glynn" is labeled "Pitchford Hollow Road".

It looks as if someone printed out the road names and literally pasted them on a paper copy of a map.

They did get Needle's Eye and The Narrows right.  They missed "Neptune's Island", or at least the little island off Bywater Roead that has a Neptune statue on it, and thus invites the name.

Thanks for the correction Hodja.  That is a classic example of a brain f@rt, which I seem to have more and more of lately.  I was refering to the Willow Glynn area being known as Pitchford Hollow.  GlynnMere is what they call the area between the old Veazeys and the start of Willow Point shoreline.  On the other hand it validates that the RL map is not a historically true and accurate representation.

I wish I could give you more info on maps but unfortunately I don't have any info on any of them.  I can tell you that I have never bought any "special" map of the lake.  I have just bought them at local shops and marinas through the years.  The couple I do have still are currently stored on the boats in a barn at the farm under three layers of cover or I would get one and find out the publishers info.  Although I couldn't reall say how historically accurate they are at this point.  All of the "older" versions I've had have been mostly given away or left on old watercraft when sold.  It has been a long time since I needed one so I haven't really taken a close look at one lately.  I only keep them on the boats to show visitors an overview of the lake and point out what areas I may have taken them too on a given trip.  Even those incidents is more about what they didn't see as opposed to what they did.  It always astounds folks that see how large the lake really is.  Of course I am sure that in 40-50 years the names will have changed even more as the lake evolves.

Best advice is to buy a map at your local conveneince store and study it, ask any neighbors or locals if they have older maps that you could look at for comparison, and last but not least, ride the shorelines.  While in different areas stop and talk to folks you see on their peirs or in their yards and ask them how they refer to the area, how long they have been here etc. etc.  I am sure that you will find 99% of them more than willing to share what they know.  Through the years I have talked with scores of "looky-loos" that come through on weekends, and sometimes I am the looky-loo who stops at others places to ask questions.  Of course the most effecient way is to take an old timer like me along on a few boat rides and before long you will be an old timer too.

If the map for sale on this site is the same one I have (I think it is, but I'm not sure), it's far better than the Russell map and also the best map I've seen for Lake Martin. It's not perfect, but has many creeks, islands, and special interest areas marked.

We sold our Folks place last year after their passing.  We left a map on the wall in the Den with all the old local names of parts of the Lake, (nicknames).  I'll see if I can get a copy.  It's 35 or so years old with penciled in notes.
