 I think a lot of it is taking advantage of what the market will bear. I've spent some time on Clayton lake in virginia. The marinas there only charge about ten cents more than area gas stations away from the lake. That's certainly reasonable for the service provided. But to charge almost double the market price for gas is gouging, and makes me question the integrity of Marina owners.

On the other hand, if you're too lazy to tote a few five gallon jugs of gas down to the water every now and then i guess you deserve to be taken advantage of.

I haul my non-ethanol and it costs a little over $2.50, but two excuses used by marinas:  1.  Pollution insurance for gas spills is high, and 2.  They have to make all their money in about 4 months a year.  Also, don't forget, over half of all gas sold on the lake is by one company, Russell Lands!

 It would be gouging but jot a violation. They can charge any price they wish in non crisis times. It is there privelidge/right to do so. Just as it would be your right to not buy from them as I am sure nobody would. Now if every station in Alex city got together to do so and they all did, that would be price fixing and would be violations of several statutes. Marinas are fortunate that they serve a somewhat captive audience. They are free to charge what they wish, just as you are free to not purchase it.

  The example below about coastal marinas is interesting but I can see why it's so. They have a more year round customer base and probably a closer proximity to their inland competition. I don't know but I suspect the rules may be a little more lax also. I say that because the solution to pollution is dilution and the Atlantic is a bit larger than Lake Martin. Just my opinion, I could be wrong.

I love to hear people complain about on water gas prices at the marinas, as if there are no other alternatives to fueling their pleasure craft.

America is still (relatively) free. So if there's so much price disparity, why don't the complainers put their money where their mouth is, and just open their own business of delivering gas to boats on the water?

You can charge whatever you want, right? You'll make a mint! Go for it!

I hauled gas in the trunk/truck bed/trailer for years in 5 gallon tanks, then lifted it up to fuel cap level and held it there for several minutes while it transferred. 5 gallons into a 35 gallon tank, thrice at least , every weekend?? Nope.

We do not use large amounts of fuel every weekend and never did in 25 years. Marinas Gouging?? Maybe, but I am glad they are on the Lake. If nobody was willing to pay that price every weekend, it would drop, for sure. Plus, Big Plus, it gives the kids/grandkids a reason to drive YOUR boat to gas it up, and pick up some cokes, chips, ice, energy drinks, etc charged to YOUR account, right??

Pop? The boat gas is low. Can we......

Damn, I agree with Mack. If you are teenager, I can understand hauling gas. For WIX to be hauling gas is sad...if you can't afford to gas up on the lake you should sell the boat and ride a bike.

just because you can't pick up a 5 gallon gas can, don't think everyone is as lazy and out of shape as you are.  Besides, @ a $1.75/gal premium a 35 gallon fill up costs over $61.25 more than hauling yourself. GOOF that would almost cover your bar tab @ Willow Point CC one afternoon.

I'm confused as to all this whining about the price of Gas on the Lake or even Land for that matter. You guys look like idiots posting complaints about HIGH prices of GAS! Gas is the cheapest commodity you can purchase at where ever you are. Let me put this into perspective for you. You guys are the ones who will pay $1.49 for a 20oz. bottle of water or soft drink which equates to $9.54 a GALLON ......... Bah bah bah !!!

If anyone is price gouging ...... maybe its the "Water Boy"

After all, some need to show their wealth....or the appearance of wealth.  Walmart sells that same water for $2.98 for 35 bottles.  That's about 8 1/2 cents for each bottle. Classic rip off.....unless you need to show off.  I saw the price on one of the "energy drinks" at a 7/11 today is $2.99....amazing to see minimum wage workers buying that krap.

Not directed to Pint but the others complaining about the price on the water.  Not sure why the angst.  It is what it is.  If you think the Marina price is too high, invest in some jugs and carry.  You can "pay" at the pump or you can "pay" with the inconvenience and extra effort of gassing with jugs.

I don't get it when someone invests $20K or $40K in a boat then 8itches about a buck or two a gallon to fill it up on the lake.  I personally fill up at the marina every now and then just to ensure it is available when I need it.  Get a grip folks.

Feel the same.  We fill up at the marina and accept the extra cost as part of the convenience.  Filling up at the marinas also gives jobs to HS and college students working to earn some extra money.

Our marina is $3.79. Here in Tennessee we have a "healthy" road tax added to our fuel. Since I never run my boat down the roads, why shoud I have to pay this tax on the water? I can buy non-road use fuel for the farm, so why not in a boat? Does Alabama have the same tax and is it applied to marine fueling?

The point of the thread was to get an idea of what I was going to pay on the water or should I fill up before launching for the first time this year.  I wasn't trying to start a war.  By the way, price gouging does not apply to fuels anyway.  The price of fuels always increases after a natural disaster and nothing is ever mentioned about it.  All price gouging does is get politicians some free publicity.  Nothing more, nothing less.  It is not intended to help us.  Just them.
