Federal goverment loans Brazil's state owned 'big oil' company, Petrobras, 10 billion (with a "B") US taxpayer dollars for offshore drilling. But I thought that fossil fuel production, offshore drilling in particuliar, is bad for the environment..
So why are we doing this??? I guess it's a coincidence that Billionaire George Soros' single largest holding is Petrobras?? Of course, silly...

In ten seconds or less, a search for "netroot" on Google came up with the following from Wikipedia:

"Netroots is a recent term coined to describe political activism organized through blogs and other online media, including wikis and social network services."

You liberals want someone else to do EVERYTHING for you.

but is $10,000,000,000 (is that 10 billion?) of our tax dollars going to the Brazil's State owned oil company, Petrobras?? And is this not the same company that is Mr. Soros has invested most of his holdings in?? I know, I'm paranoid..

That is what I read on both accounts also.............but I think the amount is ONLY $2 billion............

Palin used the 2B figure in her blog. The actual number from all other accounts is 10B.

"The loan is equal in value to a similar credit line agreed to with the China Development Bank, also for exploiting Brazil’s “pre-salt” area, so-named because the estimated 80 billion barrels of high-quality crude in that new oil frontier lie far beneath the ocean floor under layers of rock and an unstable salt formation."

As I've stated many times ... I'm not a liberal. I'm a centrist and have voted for both Dems and Repubs.

Second, you are correct that I should have looked before asking, but I honestly thought it was a word that rude evin was inventing.

In the future, I will look before I request. Thanks.

Not your President if he's sending 10 billion or our tax dollars to Brazil to fund their offshore drilling. So we can buy it back.. what am I missing??

Quick question Hound. When was the last big oil spill related to drilling exploration? Quick, don't do a google search. Answer my question as you are a very well informed person and obviously concerned about the environment. Without looking and searching tell me when and where was the last big oil spill related to oil exploration that you can remember?

My guess is you can't remember one because it is very rare and they spend millions of dollars to prevent/mitigate releases that do occur so there is little, if any damage to the environment, and the damage does not last long when it does occur. I know of what I speak being in the environmental business.

Fact is there is very little to no impact to the environment related to exploration. Most releases occur during transportation (either by ship or pipeline) and the last big transportation release in the U.S. was the Exxon Valdez which happened over 20 years ago. In that 20 years we have produced almost 11 billion barrels of oil in the lower 48 (excluding the billions produced in Alaska). In the second quarter of 2006 alone over 26,000 petroleum wells (oil and natural gas) were drilled in the U.S. Extrapolating out that is over 2 million wells drilled over that same 20-year period. All without a memorable spill.

But we need to worry about the environment from oil well drilling........not!

I don't see anything wrong with offshore drilling. Don't think it threatens the environment.
I'm also wondering what message it sends of Chavez if we put some money into Brazil offshore drilling. Maybe there is a political side to it too.

Which brings us full circle to husker's original post. Why Brazil? Why not the US where at least the money from the oil stays in the country instead of going to Brazil?

I read your post above "Who cares about the environment" and took it to mean that the proposal to drill would harm the environment. Sorry if I misunderstood.
