We have a "95" Yamaha WaveVenture, 2 cyl. 80 hp, that has always been hard to crank. We put the choke in different places and eventually it cranks if the battery is hot enough. We have a WaveRunner GP with the same engine and it cranks up fast.
I am pretty sure that only 87 octane gas has been used lately but I remember that the first few years we ran 89 octane.
I wonder if we need to run 93 octane in it. We had to use starting fluid and a jump box to crank it last weekend.
Anybody else had this problem? I plan to replace the plugs and filters before we take it on our vacation next weekend. Anything else?

Is this the same one we cleaned the fuel system on? And, my Wave Runner is doing the very same thing, and we just did the fuel pumps and cleaned the tank out last month. Once the unit cranks, it does fine the rest of the day.

No, this is the larger WaveVenture. Do you use 93 octane? My son-in-law told me to leave the gas valve "on" at the end of the day. I know in the past we have had to charge the battery as much as possible thinking most of the fire is going to start it and not to the plug. It really has to spin fast to crank, but once it cranks, it is good for the day.
The only other problem is after letting it idle a while it won't take off when you give it the gas.

I had similar problems with a Wave Venture III. I solved it by doing two things. There was a hose that acts as a vent. It has a filter type device on the end. This device plugs up and will make it hard to start. I cleaned it out. At the same time I added a priming pump. Now the first time I start it I use the primer pump.
This has solved all of the problems.

We have a 97 Wave Venture 90 hp twin cyl/twin carb that has been hard to crank for years. What seems to work is full choke, full throttle, crank for 5-6 seconds. Then full choke, NO throttle, crank until she kicks over (sometimes takes as long as 10 seconds). If that doesn't work, we remove the plug in the plastic intake gizmo immediately above the carbs, pour a bit of gas in the hole, replace the plug, and crank on full choke. It also helps to remove the rubber water diverter thingy from the carb air intake and place your hand over the opening, thus giving it a "super-choke" condition.
The primer bulb idea may well be a more permanent way to do the raw-gas-in-carbs method.
Our experience is also that once it fires the first time it kicks right over the rest of the day.

I don't know enough about it to do the pump but I will try the combination you have found to work on yours. It usually ends up cranking but I never found out what works everytime. I think Yamahas are great and mostly trouble free, but hope new Yamahas are not hard to crank. I have ordered new plugs, plan to get new filter next week, and the next tank will be at least 89 octane.

The day after my son-in-law brought it home it fired right up in my shop. I will see how it does after sitting a few days. I have ordered the plugs and plan to get a fuel filter tomorrow. We are planning on taking it to Orange Beach and riding in the bay this weekend if it will crank. I will take my jump box for sure.
The other WaveRunner GP is really messed up now. A wire that comes out the top of the motor is melted where it was wire wrapped to a water hose and where it goes into the motor doesn't look right, hard to explain. Plan to see about it when I get back from vacation.

Not sure of your carb configuration, but if you can get some raw gas to the intake and choke it she will fire. New fuel filter is a good idea, since the hard starting seems to be related to a lack of fuel. Gas is fresh, I presume? Two-strokes seem to be more picky about the freshness of the fuel.

I have the fix for these skis to make them crank properly, no its not a primer kit and no I won't tell you how to fix it, bring it to my shop, drop it off, pick it up when I call you and go ride.

I can get mine to crank...but I do have a question of a different nature. Sometimes when I leave the Waverunner in the water for a while I notice there seems to be a leak...yet the hull is intact. It is a well used 97 model. Is it possible the seal between the power plant and impeller is leaking? If so is it an expensive fix? Also, is it true that the placement of the impeller is adjusted over time to allow for wear, and thus keep a tighter seal between the impeller and housing?
We love our Waverunner, and it has given us great service - except for the time I had to have a cylinder rebuilt because my teenage daughter confused the oil fill cap for the gasoline fill cap...:>)....can't really fault the machine for that! But because of its age there may be some things we need to do to keep her going. Looking for advice. Thanks.

House, one other thing. Be careful about using starting fluid. The mechanic at the place I bought ours (Ward's Yamaha in Troy) cautioned against using fluid, as it is more explosive than gas and could blow a hole in the top of a piston. He is the one who recommended the starting sequence I posted above, and really seems to be a genius with two-strokes.
