With the acquisition of Alltel by Verizon, has anyone noticed a change in the Verizon coverage at the lake?

About 18 months ago I completely lost ATT coverage at my lake house. I switched to Verizon and got a pretty good signal at the lake house but the coverage between the lake and Birmingham was not good. I later found out the ATT signal had returned and switched back and usually have a fair signal.

Now I have set up to switch my local lake phone service to Com-link (I already use them for internet) to save over $50 per month, but I heard a horror story on an attempted installation by Com-link yesterday. Apparently you cannot have 911 service with Com-link in my area.

Based on all this I may go cell only.

Comments on any of the above will be welcome.

Thanks,

We are on the north end of the lake and was able to get a land line from AT&T, unlimited local, long distance, and dsl internet for $62 a month.

For wireless, my wife has AT&T and I have T-Mobile. Coverage between Bham and the north end of the lake has been really good on both carriers. Out on the lake, when one of our phones has no coverage, usally the other one does.

8, For me Verizon has gotten much better the last 6 months. I'm in the bluecreek area and now have great coverage. Also back and forth to B-ham is good. But, it will drop a call on 280 when in a low area. I just hit redial and the call conects. Nutin

We used NEXTEl cel phones and ATT landline until last month. NEXTEL service was great at the lake and on the lake. The only problem was we now have three teens and they are into texting etc. Alltel has the circle plan where you can call up to ten numbers at any time at no additional cost with unlimited usage. We disconnected the ATT line and use only the cel numbers. The ATT line still has dial tone and works only for 911.

We're in the Parker Creek area and have an AT&T landline with unlimited local and long distance calling. Have Verizon Wireless on my cell phone. I get only fair reception and generally have to be outside to get reception. But otherwise I get good cell phone reception when I'm driving around.

I have AT&T and get a perfect signal at Anchor Bay. Went for a cruise last year from Anchor Bay to Chuck's. Had the laptop going with air card and never lost the signal, though it got weak near the islands...

We are in the Parker Creek area and have Alltel and have great service. I can't think of a time when it didn't work well. We were in the Old Bama Park area from 2001 - 2005 and had good coverage there as well. We have great coverage out on the water too. We don't have a land line at the house.

Verizon has improved markedly in Sandy Creek. The store manager in Auburn told me that they had made tower acquisitions and the service was going to further improve. They recognize the lake is a problem.

We have a land line through ATT bundled with our Birmingham line. WE switched cell coverage from ATT to Verizon because ATT cut out in our neighborhood in Birmingham, in my daughter's place at Auburn and at our place at the lake. We seem to have better coverage in the winter. We kept one cell phone with ATT to compare coverage. We still have to leave the house and run up to the street with the ATT. Verizon might force us outside but that is still better than what we had. Good luck

End of Manoy Creek - Verizon is good. No place on lake I have found yet that I cannot get service. Luck.

If you use your cell phone and also want to learn to communicate with your computer, check out skype. www.skype.com . This is a free service and all long distance calls are free including international. You will have to have those you like to contact sign up as well. I talk to my father-in-law in Mexico clear as a bell and we get to see each other if we choose. Just another option to check out.

Magic Jack is the way to go if you have good DSL or Cable internet.
