Bought a new house in this past July. My neighbor feeds the geese twice a day. So, at 8:30 a.m and 5:00 p.m., approx 50-60 geese land for their feedings. Seriously, what are some practical solutions. She says, "she's been doing it for a few years". They eat at her place and then "fertilize" my lawn. Concerned about water quality.

An invisible fence and a couple of Jack Russel Terriers. Bet it keeps the geese out of your yard. Not sure about helping the water quality since there is always run-off even from the dawgs.

Set yourself up a skeet range in your front yard and invite a bunch of us over at 8:15AM and 5:15PM for a little skeet practice. I'll be there for sure. I can't stand those nasty things.

I wouldn't have imagined it but I was told a story by a small dog owner on LM of how the geese surrounded his dog and literally pounded him to death with their beaks/heads. I'd go Airedale.....

Wonder if the Ala Dept of Natural Resources or Ala Power has suggestions/remedies? Or, better yet, would a gov agency intervene if water quality/lawn damage came into play????

We don't need the gov. involved. All we need is a shotgun and a pot to cook those sorry things in.

We bought a cabin 2 weeks ago, but rented a place last year that became a "poop station" for those nasty geese. As long as we were at the house, they didn't come around as often. Hopefully the goose lovin' lady doesn't live near our new place! Good luck,.... they're a headache,..... they're nasty and LOUD!
|
A paintball gun will run them off without injury (back off the velocity a little if you use a pro model). I aim just short, unless I get a stubborn one. Get plenty of paint balls. It takes about a week before they believe that you really don't love'em and you mean business.
....... but, it may not be the best way to make friends if you're out paintin' while the neighbors are throwing food. Tough situation!
Something else you might try is an electric fence strung up about 5" off the ground and down the property line. With this idea, just run one light wire and only turn it on when you see them coming. I haven't tried this technique with geese, but I was successful using it to protect garden plants froml critters a few years back.

I think they are protected. The greens keeper at Chase Lake C.C.in Hoover shot a bunch of them that were eating his newly planted greens and he was arrested then fined heavly.
|
Thats why I just bother them until they leave......however in todays world, I guess they probably have more rights than I do.

They are only protected by a hunting season. The reason the golf course people got in trouble was they shot them out of season. I've played on a course where they had to clean the 18th green three to four times a day. I've missed many a putt because of those nasty birds. They're like lawyers.......too many of them and they are nasty and cost us money.

problem has been around for years...they dont pay atention to smaller dogs and even will hiss at humans...but those bird bombs (I used them for several years) will chase them off...and they only make noise...not illegal either

This may sound crazy but what scares geese and ducks is your wingspan. The ones around our house will attack the dogs but are terrified of my son when he swims at them (butterfly stroke). If they are up in the yard this is a good time of year to buy a kite that looks like it has a bigger wingspan than a goose and hang it nearest the spot they like. Good luck.

I've got an old lever action Daisy BB gun that will only get their attention and will not hurt them. Ping those little tail feathers a few times (and have fun doing it!) and the geese, along with squirrels or any other undesirables will scamper. Been our remedy for years...

I agree. Feisty dogs with so much courage, and no inward thought of being small in statue. Neighbor on one side of me had a pair, and the neighbors on the other side had a pair of Bassetts. There was the jip jip all the time from the JR's and the howling from the Bassets. Always wondered what sound you would get from offsprings if you mated those two breeds. The JR's kept the UPS man high stepping it. Nothing entered their territory exept their owners.

Realistic lookin rubber alligators.
My cousin had a problem w/ geese until he put out a rubber gator. Once he place the gator, the geese quit coming around.
When I bought my place on Martin, I put out an alligator rubber decoy. I have never had a problem with geese.
Give it a try.
