I got tired of losing electronic equipment or having it damaged so I put all my stuff on battery back-ups. For the last few weeks I have been getting alarms and I thought we had voltage drops. Today eveything was beeping so I called Al Power. They came right out and found 270 volts... a serious power surge and left to go up line to find the problem. My conclusion? The power is not that reliable here for electronic equipment so protect it with APC devices.

What was the outcome? Now that APCo has acknowledged they had a power surge, I wonder what liability they will accept, and for how long. Power surges like that will cause damage to refrigerators, a/c units, etc., the won't show up till months later.

APCo has indeed paid for surges. Several years ago an accident took out a power pole. While restoring, a surge went down the line for a few miles beofre entering a business taking out everything plugged in. They were paid for all new computers, printers, fridge, clocks etc. No argument etc from them at all.

What area of the lake have you experienced the surges?

No call no nothing. Getting 126V now. Uh...wouldn't that be 252V on the full circuit? Any EE's out there? I know the basic physics of the current but what happend to 220 and 110 depending on the potential difference in the lines coming in? I thik I'll call Al Power tomorrow to see what has been done on the circuit.

Thats not a bad voltage. I will ask tomorrow and see what the limits should be but, I am confident 126 isnt to high. Check back here tomorrow...

Voltage is usually +/- 10% of the nominal 120/240 would think AL Power is close to this. This is my observation after being in the power generation field for 30 plus years.

What is also dangerous is a loose neutral. You have three wires coming into the house. Black to black is 220v.
From either insulated black to the bare neutral is 110v. If only the neutral is cut to the house, the 220v will balance
according to the two totalized 110v circuit loads. It might be 200v on some lights/outlets and 20v on the other lights/outlets.
A guy had a power transformer burned on a subwoofer.........I told him you have a loose neutral - it will burn down your house.
After I get a whatever, his house burns to the ground a month later. Basically you will have some stuff bright and some stuff dim.
It will kill electronics quickly. Ask BT Express about his stuff when the tree branch unplugged his neutral.......................
If this happens, pull the big breaker to off. If your 110v/220v outlets are over 130/260, call Alabama Power. If they are over 135/270, shut it off
and call Alabama Power.
Knowing the electrical pressure (volts) and water pressure (psi) wouldn't be a bad idea.
A UPS is handy for your computer/modem/router/majicjack. PM me for anything electrical/electronic.

To fix a busted stereo - I believe the button is bad, because when I push it, nothing happens. I guess it could be a blown fuse too. How much to fix the button AND replace the fuse?

Human - electronic interface issue eh. I thought that might be the problem - it happens when I don't get to the lake nearly enough...
