My lake house is just south of the amphitheater and I have terrible cell phone coverage. Are there any plans by ATT to increase coverage around Lake Martin? Does anyone else live in a "pocket" with poor coverage? I have ATT service. I've learned the "sweet spots" around the property where I can have a phone conversation. Thanks

If you have Internet service check with AT&T, they have a booster box that can increase you signal.
I had the same problem you have and it helped until they built a new tower near me. Good luck.

Verizon has the best coverage at the lake. We had to get a PagePlus phone to use at the lake. Cheap service plans. Same Verizon coverage.

ATT store in Auburn says yes they do have such plans, and an honest employee told me forget ATT for my area for now.
Went with T-Mobile and do have a booster they provided only after we went on an mission to get it. To be fair, we had good service at the house prior to the tornado. Not good since, but the new phones are much, much better. Left Verizon because of cost, saving over 1200/year with T-Mobile.with a better family plan etc.

I had ATT until just recently and I will tell you at the Lake they suck. When I bought there service a little over 2 years ago. I was told that they would be installing a new tower in my area very soon... Right! To get any reception at my home I had to buy a micro cell and hook it up to my internet service. I would still drop calls setting at my kitchen island 10 feet away from the micro cell. After numerous calls to them I just gave up and waited for my contract to expire. I now have Straight Talk. They use the Verizon network and I have not dropped any calls from my end since I switched. There are a few dead spots around the Lake but very very few and as far as I can tell no cell phone work in them.
If you want to buy a micro cell cheep or an ATT Iphone 4. I have two. One is 16 mg the other is 32 send me a email.

As the others have said, Verizon is the only sure bet at the lake. We had ATT for many years before moving to the lake in '05. Changed to Verizon in '08 after giving up on ATT promises of better coverage. Changed to Straight Talk w/Verizon last year and rarely, very rarely have a dropped call. Matter of fact Straight Talk used to offer ATT service in the area, but they dropped ATT option completely for this area. I read somewhere that the ATT transmission system of GSM is an inherent problem that leads to most dropped calls. T-Mobile uses GSM also. Verizon uses the CDMA system which for me is much better everywhere. All our kids, and g-kids use ATT and it seems many calls with them are interrupted. Very few black out areas with Verizon system while driving. I'd love to buy a used smart phone set up for CDMA, if anyone has one they'll sell.

Verizon owns the lake area. Now you can get their network with a Straight Talk phone unlimited everything for $45/mo. You can't tell the difference and you'll even hear "Verizon Network" in the voice responses sometimes.
Just make sure you get a CDMA phone when you buy it. The other Straight Talk phones are on ATT. Find a new Wal-Mart and go talk to the kid at the front of the store in the wireless phone area. The CDMA phone model numbers usually have a "C" at the end of the number. They also are offering the iPhone 4 & 5 but you'll have to pay bucks for that.
And before shelling out for a new phone I'd find a friend with a Verizon phone to make sure the Verizon network is OK at your particular location.
Good Luck!
