I wonder if these debates really have any impact on how the voters perceive a candidate or if they are just fodder for the talking heads?
I saw Cain and Gingrich on Meet the Press this week. I thought that Cain came across much better -- articulate, composed. Newt just seemed like he was lost in some intellectual debate (with himself? it wasn't clear)

Hound. Thats a good question and I believe if you ask Rick Perry if they have an impact you will get an earful. He entered the race and vaulted to front runner status. Since his less than stellar performances and as a result of how he answered some questions, he has come back to earth rather rapidly. And ask Herman Cain who could not break out of single digits until he resonated with a lot of conservatives who only got to know him through the debates. And I really think the only reason Romney is holding his own is because of his debate performances. Otherwise I am convinced he would be fading as conservatives start to hone in on who they like. I could go on but I think the debates have had a very strong impact on the view of the candidates by the primary voters.

But I wonder if it lasts.. or do people change their minds during the primary, when the candidates are out there pressing the flesh and people actually have to vote for a particular candidate.
I think that when the talking heads pick the "winner" of a debate, it naturally gives that candidate more exposure -- and more exposure gives the candidate a larger chance to put forth and expand their ideas.
I don't think that it's just the debates killing Rick Perry, although I'm sure it's not helping him. I think this thing last weekend about that Pastor making a comment about Romney's religion -- Perry should have been the first one to distance himself. I don't think it resonates with people when you start criticizing someone's religion. From what I'm reading, Perry is having some problem with his facts too. And Romney has been gaining points by pointing out some of the problems with his policies in Texas. I think people are put off by his legislating the HPV vaccine (even though I personally think it is a good idea).

Well I guess we will see if it lasts because I don't think Perry is going to do a good job in any debate. I agree that Perry's problems go beyond the debate performance which is why I said it was his answers as well. But I definitely disagree about the HPV vaccine. That is the parent's responsibility, not the government. I think he meant well, but he didn't do well.

I didn't mean that I thought the legislation was a good idea. I agree that it is a parents decision, not the government. But, from everything I've read, it appears that the vaccine is a good idea.

Gotcha. I don't know that much about the vaccine but I suppose if a girl is sexually active and has multiple partners that are as well it is a good idea as long as the potential side effects are not worse.

Rick Perry is a personal friend of mine and I know him well.
In the presidential voting booth, I am not sure, yet. I will give him time.
