What ARE we going to do? This comes from the Fox News web site:
"A federal appeals court panel in California says people have a right to lie about receiving military medals.
The Tuesday ruling involves the case of
Xavier Alvarez, who falsely claimed in 2007 to have won a Congressional
Medal of Honor. He was charged with violating the federal Stolen Valor
Act, which makes it a crime to falsely claim to have won a military
medal.
Alvarez challenged the law on appeal as a violation of his free-speech rights." Is the whole country on crack? I really have a hard time understanding how falsely claiming to have military medals is a freedom of speech issue.

He was running for a local office. I certainly hope the DOJ takes it to the Supreme Court.

Apparently, that court determined that lying about military service, and honors received, is protected by the First Amendment, much the same as lying about about constitutional eligibility to hold elected office.

What a missed opportunity. When I lied about having sexual relations with that girl, I was just exercising my right to free speech. Maybe the answer is we need to force all candidates to submit their resume to a court as a signed affidavit under penalty of perjury. I would say that would prevent the lying but we are talking about politicians. They will still lie, its just they won't be able to hide behind free speech to cover up their obfuscation.
Let me guess, it was the 9th Circus and he is a Dem.....

Here is proof than one can libel himself. Once you squandered your name, then like shredded paper in the wind, you cannot have it back. The theft of valor nets a life sentence of distust and disrespect. You can never make love again... to a woman who knows you.

It's disturbing. It says a lot about the direction of our culture.
Freedom of Speech? I don't see it -- although if I squint hard enough I guess that lying is covered as "freedom of speech". It's the lack of moral outrage that bothers me.

All of you veterans… and Hound… know this story. Only the actors and venue change.
I am driving to a pick-up golf game on Pensacola NAS. The car is full of veterans from various services. I know that one of them… the loudest… served three years in the Army and attained the rank of Spec 4 as a signal teletype operator. He knows that I know this. BUT, he runs his mouth anyway. He informs everyone that his DD-214 doesn’t show his SPEC-OPS assignments. At that point, every veteran in the car knows him for what he is. Nobody stops him from blathering on. I’m sure that he continues to destroy his credibility to this date.
…shredded paper in the wind.

GReat point. If you lie to anyone it's OK because it's your right to lie. So much for charges of perjury too.

A few months ago, I watched with interest on a school board election in B'ham when one of the candidates claimed he had a PhD, but in fact, he had not even completed high school. And when he was exposed, he refused to drop out of the running. His reason? He thought that it would make him seem more qualified.
It's horrifying to think that lying is now accepted, and once exposed, the people involved don't even seem embarassed. What has happened to integrity?
And while I'm on my soapbox, why is everyone who does the right thing a hero? A "hero" used to be special for extreme acts of courage or selflessness. Now everyone is a hero, just because they show up.
I try not to think about these things too often, because it's just so darn depressing.

"Now everyone is a hero, just because they show up."
Agree wholeheartedly Hound. Could it have something to do with the entitlement mentality? All one has to do these days is what good folks expect themselves to do - and all of a sudden they are heroes.
Keep on lowering that bar, Democrats and Liberals....next thing you know the only requirement to be a hero is to be breathing.
November can't come soon enough..... but when are the Repubs going to present a coherent plan to get us out of this quagmire?
Argh.
