MM,WW,summer lover,lamont et al;
I'm still waiting for the answer to the final question in my lunchtime post......Should not we all carefully consider and research each issue on a case by case basis and then make our decision? Isn't this what any thinking and responsible citizen should do rather than blindly lining up behind the party talking points regardless of the party or the issue?

i know i don't blindly line up behind a party. i have been critical of republicans as well as democrats. I have my own mind and draw my own opinions. Always have. But my views align much closer to the positions of the republican party of less government, less taxes, more personal choice/responsibility and free markets and enterprises.

Although you and Hound may disagree with me, I think most folks analyze each issue and come to their own conclusion however, in the end, you must vote for 1 of 2 candidates. You will never agree with your candidate 100% of the time so, you have to align yourself with the one who conforms most to the issues important to you. It's fine to be a moderate but, you can't go into that voter's booth and individually vote on each issue, unfortunately.

Sorry, I can't figure out which you are waiting for a response on. Just point me there and I'll look at it.

With this response we see why so little positive change policy wise ever gets accomplished in this country. Both parties are controlled by the extremes at opposite ends of the spectrum and they refuse to compromise for fear of losing their "base" (when will we learn that America's "Base" is all the people rather than not a narrow slice that keeps certain people in office), the result is that neither can prevail. Water watcher both of us just confirmed we would like to be done with Social Security as we know it, Your option is impossible both politically and socially, mine under certain circumstances is possible if we can ever get back to the realization that sometime 65% of a loaf on the kitchen table is better than all the loaf on the trash heap.

Why do you assume that positive policies all originate from the middle? Maybe a better question would be why should someone compromise if they are correct in their views? When I hear people express views like this I am reminded of all the naysayers when Reagan said his goal was to win the cold war. He was pooh poohed by moderate forign policy "experts", the media, etc. And yet he won because he was right.

It is easy, and in my view gutless, to accept compromise on really important issues. I am not saying Social Security is one of those issues but I do believe that meaningful reform is not going to happen until there is a genuine belief that this abomination is in jeopardy of being dramatically altered. Only then will the Democrats in Congress stop blocking every sensible proposal. Until then, they will use any suggestion of reform as a way to scare senior citizens in order to gather up their votes.

Sorry guys, when I am at the lake, I seldom fire up the computer - other stuff to do. I must have missed or dismissed the "lunchtime post", however, I have already stated that I am a fiscal conservative, and a social liberal. I vote "damage control", and for President have always voted against the Democratic candidate. The Dems on a Federal level seem more inclined to take my money and my guns, if I want that - I will move to the EU, I would not try to sh**can the American way of life for such "progress."
