Court. He is "retiring". Always a strange man, I don't think I've ever heard of anyone who is not old and sick retiring from the SC. It's a pretty cushy gig from what I've read.
This will give Obama his first SC pick. I suspect that Ginsberg will leave before his term is out.

I think this is interesting, but a little concerning. I don't think that as a nation we benefit from having a Supreme Court that is overbalanced in one direction any more than we do with a Congress.

The unbalance is between those who are concerned with the constitutionality of law and those that are concerned with social engineering. The Supreme Court was created for the purposes of the former and not the latter.

The pick can't be much worse than Souter (who sadly was a GHW Bush nominee). What is interesting is to watch the identity politics crowd line up with their favorite minority. What I found disturbing is Obama's criteria for his pick. It needs to be someone with the judicial knowledge even though I stipulate the pick will be an activist and not a constitutionalist. At least he should consider their judicial expertise instead of their "life" experience.

Ginsberg is defintely next and no one he picks can be consistently wrong more than her. All in all these won't change the balance in the courts.

BTW, did you see the analysis that with Specter defecting the Republicans could put a solid conservative on the judiciary committee and may be able to block nominees totally out of the mainstream? They still have Lindsey Graham which can sometimes be counted on to go astray but the others are solid. Would be ironic if Obama has to settle for more of a centrist nominee because of the actions of the unscrupulous Specter. Senate rules are so arcane but they need at least one Republican to get any nominee to the floor.

If any of the Republicans, Graham included, refuse to block a revisionist Judge,I would bet there is a considerable sum of money coming into their state from the bailout.

It could be a new bonus, or a threat on the original bailout, but if you watch where the money is coming from, and where it is going, the Dems are going to try to buy one of the Repubs on the Committee.
