I have spotted several times what I hoped was a young eagle. However, my son says it is probably an Osprey. Are there Osprey on Lake Martin? I will be very disappointed if "my" eagle is not!!

The Osprey (Pandion haliaetus), also known colloquially as seahawk, fish hawk or fish eagle. It is brown on the upperparts and predominantly whitish on the head and underparts, with a brownish eye patch and wings, nesting in any location near a body of water providing an adequate food supply. Its possible it a Osprey since there also found in North America region.

Lake Martin is a perfect home for one since they feed on fish.

I attached a photo of a bald eagle (lower left) and osprey (upper right) we took at Wakulla Springs this past March. The bald eagle started fishing (look at right claw) a little too close to the Osprey nest. They really don't like each other.

...not a birding expert but , from my internet readings, I would guess that an Osprey sighting on Lake Martin would be a rare find. Osprey tend to flock mostly to coastal area. I would be interested to hear of any positive sightings in this area. The use of the pesticide DDT took a serious toll on the Osprey until it was banned but they have re-populated somewhat
in recent years.

I really believe that what I had seen WAS a young eagle. He didn't have white on him like the pictures of Ospreys that I have seen. He was just a buff or tan color as juvenile eagles are described. So I am declaring him "MY EAGLE". Thanks to everyone for your help. And that picture of the eagle and osprey is very cool!

Where on the lake have you seen your eagle. I have spotted several times a bird traveling in the same pattern near Wildwood St. and believe it could be an eagle. However, the closet nest to my knowledge is the one near Chimney Rock. Wonder how far eagles will travel to hunt and if they have a pattern to their flight.

He circles Susannah slough and sometimes perches on a power line in that area.

I think it is an Eagle. I have seen the same one and an Osprey has a large white chest. I declare it "MY EAGLE" also::))

There are Osprey on Lake Martin, eagles seem to be more common. An osprey is almost completely white underneath. A young eagle is basically completely brown, he will develop white spots as he grows.

I took this photo of a young eagle chasing an osprey a couple of years ago.
