The land that apparently was willed to a church and the church offloaded because they didn't want to or couldn't pay the taxes is now being developed, one would think for houses.  There is a new dirt road from Coosa 20 to Bywater Road, and it looks like there are surveyors stakes set out at the very top end of our slough (Cardinal Drive to Honeysuckle). Curious whether anyone has reliable info on just what is going on and whether there is a connection between the development and the apparent marking off of lots on an area in our slough that doesn't really lend itself to residences.  The cynical part of me says they are going to somehow convert those lots into boat slips, but to do that would require a massive reconfiguration of the shoreline and removal of a he!! Of a lot of lake bottom to make it navigable.

Anyone have info?

I heard that they are going to make it as a camp for underprivledged children.  We did stop one day and ask a guy working there what was being built and he was non-commital.  We asked him specifically about the underprivledged children and he said "there may be some of that".  If you notice, they are also on the other side of Coosa 20 too.  I keep thinking that there is going to be some way to access the water.  Whatever it is, it is very hush-hush.

If you look at the land they recently applied surveyors' stakes on, there is practically no water access without major dredging along what little shoreline there is.  An I would be very interested in what is meant by "underprivileged" children.  Looking at it badly I could envision some sneaking out at night and wreaking havoc on the neighborhood, and our cabin, especially if they do something with the camp at the end of our slough, woud be a prime target for mischief.

Thanks for sharing.  Hard to tell exactly where it lies with regard to Bywater Road.  The heavy blue line upper right may be Coosa 20,but hard to tell which part of 20.

If the taxes are indeed only $366/year the story that a church didn't want to pay the taxes on it doesn't seem plausible.  That they wanted the cash from selling it is very plausible, though

The red dot is squarely on Mack's place.  We are the last place on the right in the long slough to the right of Mack's slough.  The area at the very top if the slough is the area with surveyor stakes  As you can see there is a fair amount of land (although really steep) but practically no water access...now.

And it looks like the term "Estate" would seem to rule out it being a church.  Maybe "Bishop" was the donor's first or last name?  The other word after bishop seems to be a mis-spelling.

The Baptist Association Used to own a waterfront place right in that area also.  I know someone who billed them for work done at the place.  It was on older place late 60's I would guess out on a point.  It had a old concrete seawall that waa not in great shape.

Yes, that was my point.  I don't imagine property owners in the area would too happy introducing underprivieged kids into their neighborhood.  I suspect that is why it is being kept so hush hush.  

Although there has been a lot of talk lately about off water development. Apparently since people can't afford homes on the lake, Russell Lands and others are pushing off water development.  But I don't think Russell Lands has anything to do with the By-Water/Coosa development.

Wouldn't be surprised if someone thought a visit to the lake for some diverse kids out of the Montgomery ghettos would be just the thing to give them a new start in life.  And there are some who would do it just for spite, or to start the ball rolling on some legal action to get some Section 8 on the lake.

The tract was sold March 2021  for $560,000. If I  were interested in the development plans, I would call the new  owner.

My guess is multiple units with shared waterfront.  Quite possibly for short term vacation rentals.

Probably a fair guess.  It's a lot of land that has been cleared, but there are a lot of woods left too.  I have a feeling that land across from the main property must have some lake access.  Husband says not, but it seems odd to me that they would be putting in gates and such if there wasn't.  It wouldn't have to be more than a slip, if someone wanted to use it for kyaking and canoes.  

I think the biggest concern is that it will introduce a lot of strangers into a very quiet area of the lake.  It's not especially close to me, but there are a lot of part timers, i.e. empty houses, outside of the season.  

If your guess is true, just another way they will end up ruining the Lake.  If it was Alex City/Tallapoosa tax base, it would make even more sense.

That might not be a problem to them.  A big question, as you have raised, is whether the 222 acres has lake access at the area where the property touches Bywater.  Currently it shows to be owned by Alabama Power, but they do sell lots

The area you circled along Bywater is not developed and does not have an APC Lot # assigned. The shortest distance between their property and water seems to be just to the West of my propery line. I was told by APC when we bought the lot that that property could not be sold or developed because it has a mess of power lines meeting there. Of course that never stopped MONEY from making more money. Soooo, too many unknowns and too much speculation. I can only hope that after owning that property for 25 years, it is safe for the future.

I contacted Shoreline Management about the surveyor stakes adjacent to our property and they referred me to one Amy Stewart who as yet has not seen fit to return my calls. Crickets....
