Thank you so mch, David.  I'm actually looking to find someone who offers fishing lessons that I can purchase for Christmas for my husband.  Or, worst case scenario, someone who can advise me of some beginning equipment for him to learn to fish.  He's retired military and we moved here a few years ago.  Even though his family has been on the lake for 40+ years! the only fish he's ever gotten is one he shot with a BB gun!  He has expressed a desire to learn to fish and I hope to surprise him with a way to learn (for Christmas).

Sounds like someone is in for a nice Christmas present. Couple of comments. Lake Martin has several different types of fishing. Spotted and Largemouth bass, stripe bass, crappie etc. Your equipment, to some extent, will depend on the type fishing you would like to do.

In addition it depends on how you plan to fish, from the bank, boat or kayak. My wife and i fish quite often from a Hobie Kayak and boat and fish mostly for spotted bass using 100% artificial bait. I'm sure there are a number of folks that could help advise you on the different types of equipment. Bass Pro catalog is a good place to start but would also advise some help, suggest good quality gear but probably not top  end unless you just want to spend a bunch of money.  Probably buy the gear for the price of a guuide. Would be glad to give a couple of suggestions.

My two cents worth, take the  Generous fishermans offer for  your husdand to go  fishing . I would think he would have plenty of gear he could use. And then he would have a better idea of equipment needed. Let us know if we can help.

There are several good guide services on Lake Martin that advertise here.  You should talk to several of them and purchase a half day excursion for the two of you.  You can make a gift certificate to wrap.  Make sure you redeem it when you're guide thinks the chances to catch fish are best.  The best way to get someone hooked on fishing is to catch fish.

A guided trip would be the ticket I think . Reed Montgomery and affiliates used to be the way to go around here and may still be . You could call or drop by the Fish Tales tackle shop on 280 south of Alexander city and ask them for a recommendation . Tell them up front that you are interested in instruction teaching technigues that he can use on on his own afterwards .You can probably book a trip with  a deposit that could be taken in the spring .

If I could only have one oufit to fish with , it would be a 6'6" spinning rod , medium power , medium action with a 3000 series reel . With that I could do pretty much anything from panfish to stripers . Sports academy in Opelika would be a good place to look for that and they have people that can help with selection .

The guided striper bait fishing trip woould no doubt be fun and they would make it possible for you to reel in some stripers . But as far as learning much you could replicate , I am not so sure , and they are , in my opinion , very expensive .

I am guessing you have a pontoon boat . If so  ,the easiset way to get started is to get the  aforementioned out fit and a few Bandit crankbaits and idle along with the lure trailing a 100 feet or so behind the boat .

A 300 reel is a little heavy for fishing on Martin, unless it's stripers or big catfish.

Uh, 3000 reel.

A 3000 series spinning reel is not that big . A 300 size casting reel is a pretty good sized one . There is a difference .

I was talking about a 3000 series open faced spinning.

A 1500 with 8lb. test is plenty for spots in my opinion.

A 2000 spinning reel with 8 pound line and a 6 1/2 foot medium action rod is a good starter outfit for Martin.  Just be careful.  If he really likes fishing, he will end up with a boat full of rods, each one for a specific technique.

I have a fly fishing guide service called East Alabama Fly Fishing and also do private fly fishing lessons. The Tallapoosa River/Lake Martin area is great for fly fishing whether it be for bream, bass, Redeye bass, or Striper.  I also do fly tying lessons which he may be interested in. You can email me at drewrmorgan@gmail.com for details or go to www.eastalabamaflyfishing.com . Would be happy to set up whatever you would like to do for your husband.

Drew, have you figured out how to catch crappies when they are shallow with a small streamer? Experimented

with it a few years ago with out success.

That is something I've been wanting to figure out as well.  Folks have told me of a top water crappie bite also but not sure that's true. Would be a ton of fun with a 3-4-5 weight fly rod.  Let's go sometime and try to figure it out

Sounds like a plan. I think John has my e-mail address. You can get it from him. Heck, maybe he has figured it out.
