N Y City has an unfunded pension liability of $110 Billion; outstanding debt of $119 Billion-given the looting burning no tourism people leaving for Floridano Broadway plays no one working, closed businesses-and Mayor wants rioters/protestors to run freely with no N Guard & defund Police-how in the world can a City survive ? Or is the death of NY, D C, LA, Seattle, Portland,Louisville, Atlanta, Minneapolis etc etc etc

The answer to the problem is not to defund the police. We need police, because we cannot police ourselves (as we show over and over). Perhaps what is really needed is two things - better and repeated screening on who we allow to police and then ongoing training. One thing the military does really well is training and I think cities will need to spend more money and time on training police. One of the best things about training is that when a person is put into a tense situation, it is likely they will fall back on their training. Anyone who thinks defunding our police forces is responding only to the current situation, but has not considered the broader implications.
It seems to me when facing rioting, you can do one of two things - you can back of the police with the national guard and seek to end what is going on; or you can stand back and let it go, hoping that once that level of anger is out of their systems, they will stop on their own.
I don't know what it is going to take to save the cities. You can spend money fixing up the hood and creating jobs programs - all of which have been done in the past, without much success. You can try to treat the drug problem but so far, we have been unsuccessful at that. As far as perceived racial equality, it's not just white people that have to change - black people need to stop seeing themselves as victims and oppressed and blaming white people for their lack of success.
