Taxpayers are on the hook for more than $2.2 billion in expected costs from the federal government’s energy loan guarantee programs, according to a new audit Monday that suggests the controversial projects may not pay for themselves, as officials had promised.

Nearly $1 billion in loans have already defaulted under the Energy Department program, which included the infamous Solyndra stimulus project and dozens of other green technology programs the Obama administration has approved, totaling nearly about $30 billion in taxpayer backing, the Government Accountability Office reported in its audit.

The hefty $2.2 billion price tag is actually an improvement over initial estimates, which found the government was poised to face $4 billion in losses from the loan guarantees. But as the projects have come to fruition, they’ve performed better, leaving taxpayers with a shrinking — though still sizable — liability.

“As of November 2014, DOE estimates the credit subsidy cost of the loans and loan guarantees in its portfolio — that is, the total expected net cost over the life of the loans — to be $2.21 billion, including $807 million for loans that have defaulted,” the GAO said in its report to Congress.

The green program loan guarantees were created in a 2005 law and boosted by the 2009 stimulus. The first applications were approved in 2009, and through 2014 the Obama administration had issued some 38 loans and guarantees, covering 34 projects ranging from nuclear power plants to fuel-efficient vehicles to solar panels and wind-generation technology.

Thanks for posting a very interesting issue. To put it in perspective: when you compare it to the cost of the Bush's Iraq war which we have nothing to show...it doesn't look too bad.  "The U.S. war in Iraq has cost $1.7 trillion with an additional $490 billion in benefits owed to war veterans."

You ain't seen nothin' yet.  I wonder how much o-BAMMIE's and HILDA's buddies are holding in escrow for them.  Can you imagine how many billions the dimokraps have stolen from us in the past 8 years.  So many BS, gimme programs.....so crooked.

What is the count now.  $10 TRILLION the o-BAMMIE/Hilda B administration has added in the past 8 years.....and we don't even have a war, a tank, or an airplane to show for it.  GEEZ!!!

Wait....$490,000,000,000 owed to veterans.....where the hell did you rip that number from.....never mind, I think I know.  Veterans can't even see a doctor, what excuse can you dream up for this?

one of the worst aspects of the Iraq war and how much blood and money it cost is the fact that W put most of the cost in annual ''emergency funding'' legislation so it would not appear in the federal budget deficit.  A practice the ''spendthrift'' Barack Obama put a stop to early in his administration!

I have to wonder why Trump sticks to his false claim that he was always against the Iraq war when so many of his strongest supporters still think it was the greatest thing since Santa Clause was born.

Oh, BTW Classy...how much subsidy does big oil get?

Your reference article is a terribly written piece.  The $1.7 ? Trillion is for the next FORTY YEARS and includes all VA costs including Vietnam veterans, so let's talk about real numbers.  The biggest problem with the VA are the thousands upon thousands of worthless employees that can't be fired.  If they shut down the VA hospitals and put veterans on medicare, not Medicaid , the veterans would be better served....but then taxpayers would have to continue paying totally worthless VA employees.  Interesting facts:  2.7 million soldiers served in Vietnam with 58,500 killed.  Iraq and Afghanistan had 2.5 million serve with only 6,000 killed.  Death rate in Vietnam was TEN TIMES HIGHER than middle east deaths.

"Iraq and Afghanistan had 2.5 million serve with only 6,000 killed." ONLY Tell that to the 6,000 families!!!!!!

Well multiply that times ten and you've got Vietnam, and injuries were much higher too.  I know about that one, too.

BTW, don't forget about your hero's hometown.  The BLM crowd done killed over 3,000 in 9 months.  Strap that on.

Yes loss of any life in service is tragic, but nobody was conscripted and forced to serve. They one and all volunteered to serve knowing they might pay the ultimate price. The bigger tragedy now is how they are mistreated when they come home traumatized. God bless them all.

Most were either drafted, or joined under the threat of the draft.

I was referring to 6000. But the disgrace of the vets  covers them all. I just read an article about VA spending on art and the x1 BILLION dollars over budget hospital. I am sick of Taj Mahalo government buildings.  I want my services delivered  from butler buildings.

On a side note I personally know 3 Vietnam vets that "volunteered" after being given a choice by a judge of jail or army. Two were minor drug possessions and one was burglary I think. All three served honorably and one retired from the Navy. They all admitted it was probably the defining event in their life even though one remained resentful. I wonder how much of this still goes on today.

Viet Nam was another stupid war entered into based on a lie.  Do you even agree with the old and wise saying ''two wrongs do not make a right''?  Of course I don't expect an answer...you NEVER answer a question.  In this instance it is understandable because you are too stupid and too blind to even grasp the idea of doing anything WRONG as long as it is done to those you hate!   Wonder how you now define ''Republican Family values''?  You are expert, however, at some things such as taking one outrageous truth (''3000 SHOT in Chicago this year in gun violence'') and turning it into an outrageous lie (''3000 KILLED by Black Lives Matter crowd in Chicago this year'') in your feeble minded attempt to make a point...a very sick point!

better then a war to get the blue dress of page 1.

There was no faulty intelligence - just a stain on the fabric of America, and a quick way to make it go away.

http://www.wsj.com/articles/SB1028593490788851400    anyone know when the wall street journal became a alt.right hit paper?

President Bush the Elder sent U.S. forces into Somalia in December 1992 to aid the United Nations in relieving a massive famine. In May of 1993, four months into his term, President Clinton declared that mission accomplished and pulled out most of the U.S. forces. In a speech on the South Lawn to associate himself with the effort, he extolled the decision to intervene: "If all of you who served had not gone, it is absolutely certain that tens of thousands would have died by now." It was a "successful mission," he said, and "proved yet again that American leadership can help to mobilize international action ..."

But back in Somalia, with no U.S. deterrent, Somalia's warlords began fighting again. After a series of bloody attacks on U.N. peacekeepers, Mr. Clinton launched a new mission: In August 1993, he sent in a force of Rangers and Special Forces units to capture the brutal warlord Mohammad Farrah Aidid and restore order.

Those are the facts. The reason Mr. Clinton can't blame the events of "Black Hawk Down" on President Bush's father is because those events had nothing to do with him. They were Mr. Clinton's responsibility, and his alone.

damn almost sounds like our current problems with that pesky JV team ISIS/ISIL.
