If you live in StillWaters, switching to
AT&T for internet is something you should reconsider. First, HIGH SPEED is NOT available. They will
tell you that DSL is 750kbs… but if you EVER get that you will be lucky. You will be lucky to get half of that! There are long periods while NOTHING happens. We cannot view any videos that cannot be
downloaded because it takes so long to download the buffer that you get short
choppy clips punctuated by minutes of downloading. If you want to see the entire video, you’ll
have to take your laptop or iPad to a neighbor who has cable. After a rain it
gets worse. (This morning’s speed test was .650Mbs download / .100 Mbs upload…
at that speed viewing a video is impossible.)
AT&T has no plans to upgrade their
service. At least they have nothing to tell us.
I don’t know about the communities surrounding
us. Looks like HIGH SPEED internet is confined to cable service and we all know
who THAT i$!
I regret having switched. I would rather
have paid the cable monopoly than endure the archaic service to which I
switched. DON’T YOU DO IT UNTIL YOU TALK TO A NEIGHBOR WHO HAS.

that's why I advise people to go cable only. Just my opinion.

We have Verizon MiFi service..it is very good! 4g now available thru out Alabama. Also you can take the small unit with you on travels. Verizon is the best service on Lake. Our neighbors can get cable but they say we are too far off the road...I couldn't believe it. We use Direct TV and Verizon for cell phone and internet.

Sending data over two copper wires, initially for voice communications, (DSL) was designed to give the phone companies something to offer, putting them into a competing market with cable companies. The two-copper-wire infrastructure is limited by distance and the more repeaters that are in-between you and your phone company switch (usually in a downtown area), the more problems may result. Rural areas generally have poor DSL service if they have gotten it to work that far away from the switch. I'd only recommend DSL if you know your neighbors have good service with it.
Otherwise, you are more likely to have better service out of cable. I know in past years people complained about Charter at Lake Martin, but honestly I've not had the problems I thought I might have in Coosa County. I think the problems people have had are locational infrastructure issues with old cable and bad connections (water entering the line, etc). Those might affect a particular street or area of the lake where the line goes down a peninsula to a dead-end. Charter installed fiber in some areas and that has improved things.
Wireless 4G is an alternative if your signal is good but there are bandwidth limitations. If you like to watch a lot of video, it is probably not for you.
