Lake Martin is a jewel that should not be lit up like a big city. For those of you with security lights around the lake, please keep them facing down to secure your own property and not the neighbors. There are many people on the lake who wish to enjoy the stars at night. You can make a difference! Lower the lights and paint the exterior so the light direction goes down. Then all of us can enjoy the night sky!

Best of luck. It is not a problem in my slough, but I wish there were less lights for the reasons outlined above.

In many parts of the lake there are so many mercury vapor lights that folks can hardly see the stars. I have one across the slough from me (city folks that come on some weekends) that hasn't got a cover which exposes the bare bulb! Really can be distracting when sitting on our deck to view the night sky. When close to the water, i.e. on a dock, they really mess up night vision when boating. Yeah, they're a problem to those of us who live here full time

We've talked about it but haven't put anything together. I was shooting last Wednesday with some others folks. We'd made LOTS of noise and burned through lots of rouinds! Maybe feb and I can get together in the near future.

It's been considered but a shield that directs light downward, as suggested by an earlier post, would really be the best thing to install. Folks would get the area they wanted lit and horizontal light would not be a factor and would certainly allow everyone to enjoy the beautiful evenings we have here at the lake.

...there are people that live close to others - like in a subdivision, lake or otherwise- that are not considerate of things they do that affect their neighbors. That includes lights, junk in the yards, dogs running loose, smoking fires, noise...the list goes on. I don't know if it's an upbringing problem or basic self centerness but the numbers seem to be increasing. 50 years ago you didn't need covenants in subdivisions but now you have to have them. Too bad.

We need "convenants" for the side of the road. I am AMAZED at the trash our roads are collecting nowadays. A lot of people don't care

Yes it's a problem. Every dock in my area has lights and the one next to me has no shield which makes it shine right into my pier. At night you are blinded. If he weren't I nice person I would shoot it out!

If your neighbor is truly a nice person, talk to him and suggest a shield. If you have a shield just show it to him. You will then find out if he is truly nice.

...some nice young volunteers show up with their yellow shirts on and pick up all the trash and then neatly bag it. I think it's nice that today's youth cares about the environment.

My husband and I are suffering through this problem right now. We retired to Lake Martin 3 yrs ago and have bought a cottage in a beautiful slough with nice neighbors. We love to sit out at night enjoying the night sky and sounds. For some reason, a neighbor across from us installed a mercury vapor light which stays on 24/7. They do not visit their cabin more than 4 or 5 times a year and not at all in the winter months. But that light is with us every day and every night. It lights up the whole slough completely obliterating the stars. Our bedroom is lit with the eerie green glow, impossible to enjoys the dark inside or out anymore. When the family returns this spring, I will talk to them and hope they will understand. Please, people don't let your lights intrude on your neighbors space.

Just move... Have vacation homes at the poles (not Poland), and head out to lots of daylight or lots of dark - depending on what you are looking for. :-)
We are fortunate to not have the light pollution problem at this point, and enjoy stargazing on those quiet nights as well. If the light is a power company light, the only options would likely be a shrouded cover (or paint), or a suppressed .22.. Good luck.

Your neighbor might not be aware that he is bugging you. Ask him to adjust them. The worst he can say is "no". I asked each of my neighbors if my low voltage bulkhead lights (no spotlights) bothered them. None minded. One asked me not to black them out toward the water because he needed them for navigation after a long night on the water.

Thanks for the thoughts. Maybe some of the offenders will lower them or cover them!
