I know this topic has been somewhat discussed before, but just an FYI my boat registration fees increased by 59.72% over last year. Still a bargain for 3 boats and 2 PWCs. (Boats $25.00 and PWCs $20.00)
Just wish the 59.72% increase would go directly to fund additional marine police, but I would think it does not and have to assume the increase is used in the overall budget of the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources for which the marine police is a division.
Actually, I would be willing to pay double the $115 annual fee to fund additional marine police patrolling all Alabama Lakes. As in my opinion such would still would be a bargain and support and advocate safer boating.

I do not know how the Marine Police operate, but I assume having more Strategically placed Marine Police on the SHORE would help as much, if not more than having more on the water. Of course, having more police boats on the water, with less coverage area may also be of assistance...
Has anyone heard of the Marine Police complaining that they don't have sufficient resources to do their job? Or are we just collectively assuming that they are understaffed? They get assistance on the 3 busiest weekends of the year from surrounding Sherrifs departments and game wardens...
How would you propose that your money is spent, more boats and more fuel, or more officers? What would you propose be enforced that isn't enforced now? What safety issues would you like to see addressed?
Myself, I would like to think that the area had a search and rescue team (even if volunteer). I do not think that there is one, and if so it isn't funded. I know some people who would be interrested in volunteering, if the training, and resources were funded (diving/search equipment is not cheap). At least one drowning death last year could possibly have been avoided if proper resources and equipment was "staged" in various locations on the lake.
Perhaps the HOBOs could address some concerns with the commander of the Marine Police, see if funding shortfalls, or other resource issues could be assisted with, and collectively identify how to assist.

I for one would like to see 'observation posts' at strategic locations. A few small towers in the right locations would give complete coverage the lake. One officer in the tower could radio for the boats to affect a stop on the proper craft.

That may be, but my Step Mother may be the most prolific ticket writer in the country. She brought in over $400k per year for 20 years strait in a small town in Oklahoma (50k people).
I doubt very seriously that the few violations that are written up at Martin come close to covering the cost of the Marine Police. I agree they probably are underfunded. That is why I brought up an external organization supplementing them with a search and rescue team. The resources would have to come from somewhere, and would have to be "staged" to make a difference where minutes mean life or death...
