It appears that Lake Watch (should be Sandy Creek Watch) the City of Dadevile and quite likely the HOBO's through their enviormental branch, (Sandy Creek Watch) are comming up with a new reason not to upgrade the Poop filtering plant and to move the Poop Pipe out of Sandy Creek and into the main portion of Lake Martin.

Their latest combined theory is that droughts, such as the current worst drought in history, can cause there to be too little flow in Sandy Creek to absorbe all of the poop from a new and upgraded poop plant.

This works good for "Sandy Creek Watch" also known as the enviormental arm of the HOBO, and the City of Dadevile. It get the poop out of Sandy and permits the city to say "why should we spend the money to upgrade if the flow is not there"

The question comes to mind, how many of the "Lake Watch" and HOBO decision makers own property in Sandy Creek?

If these organizations are for the benefit of all Lake Martin stakeholders, then why are they attempting to do something that will help Sandy Creek to the detriment of Lake Martin generally.

And the fact that Sandy empties into the lake is balderdash. Sure it does, but as the water flows through the creek it is purified and the poop is deposited on the creek bottom.

We, those people who live on Lake Martin, and not Sandy Creek deserve some answers.

Would you mind telling me the where/when/who of your information about a conspiracy, or are you just trying to stir the poop.

There have been articles in the Outlook and the Bham News about "Sandy Creek Watch" monitoring the flow in the creek where the poop pipe is.

They had a meeting, may have been at a council meeting, where "Sandy Creek Watch" reps and the Mayor went over the numbers. There is currently only about 25% of the flow that the permit was issued on.

Reps from "Sandy Creek Watch" have or will soon have obtained equipment from Auburn University which Dadevile arranged for.

Sandy Creek Watch and Dadevile are going to share the information, according to sources from Auburn University.

The boys from sandy are saying that the permit was improper because the flow is insufficient.

Dadevile says why should we waste money upgrading if we cannot discharge as much as we can currently treat.

The conspiracy plan would provide for the poop to be pumped to some other location on the lake. This would work for "Sandy Creek Watch", because it gets the poop out of their back yard, it would work for Dadevile because it would get Lake Watch of their back, and they could spend less money on a pipe than they would have to spend on the upgrade.

If you need more information call the Mayor's office, or "Sandy Creek Watch"

It is obvious you are misunderstanding the situation.

What makes you think that? Can you explain what you mean?

Moving the waste to Alex City to a facility more suitable to handle the volumne is an option or consideration Suggested by Lake Watch and the HOBOs rather than having the waste dumped into the Sandy Creek Area and eventually into the rest of the lake during torrential downpours. The current system of Dadeville is in need of extensive repairs which will take some time. It is a way to help the city of Dadeville during the repair period. That may not be a professional explanation but it is the way I understand it. There is no conspiracy or a trade off. If there is then its not on the part of Lake Watch or the HOBOs. Taking care of the lake is a dead serious proposition with these folks.

Well said Lakeman. The Dadeville WWTP problem is a long term issue that has nothing to do with the drought. As Lakeman pointed out, the treatment plant has been overflowing with large rains for years and dumping raw sewage into the lake.

I've talked to one family that had three children develop ecoli infections two years ago (one hospitalized) from swimming in Lake Martin within a mile of mouth of Sandy Creek.

Has there been any violations since the beginning of the drought?

Where is this dump located on Sandy Creek? We have a house northeast of the Gunter AFB Rec. area off Ridge Rd. We swim all summer in the Sandy Creek area with our small children and don't dig the idea of a Poop Pipe nearby. Anyone know where it is? I looked on the map and can't find poop pipe anywhere, ha, ha.

Yes, there were violations and fines this summer we know. The ADEM information is delayed so we will find out more recent info soon. You can bet the city doesn't publish it.

The treated sewage outlet is in Chatasoffka (sp) Creek, a very small tributary of Sandy Creek.

Add one more to the list. In 2002 my youngest daughter was in the hospital for 8 days from the same thing.

Kizma, some might say you suffer from a mild case of cranial rectal defilade, but in any event, here is a one-time response from Lake Watch.

The only conspiracy I know of comes from citizens from all around the lake who want the Dadeville wastewater treatment plant brought into compliance with their current discharge permit. The plant has been in and out of compliance since 1992, and is still failing monthly tests...with or without droughts. There is reasonable doubt based on our preliminary testing whether Chattasofka Creek can assimilate the current waste load from Dadeville. There is even more doubt whether the creek will be able to handle more waste when the city implements its plan to increase the plant's capacity from 420,000 gal per day to 750,000 gal per day in order to accomodate future industrial development.

This issue didn't suddenly spring onto our radar screen. For the past seven years the Middle Tallapoosa Clean Water Partnership, of which Lake Watch is a member, has met every two months to develop a Watershed Management Plan that includes a list of concerns about point-source discharges. We repeatedly invited the City of Dadeville to participate in the meetings to no avail. The plan lists the Dadeville wastewater treatment plant as a high priority concern because of their past record of non-compliance.

Currently the city is pursuing funding to meet the requirements of a Consent Decree between them and ADEM, and they still face resolution of a lawsuit by the Alabama Attorney General for numerous water quality violations. Regarding the funding, Lake Watch wrote a letter of support on behalf of the city to successfully obtain a sizable grant to do needed repair work on their sewer lines. We regularly attend their city council meetings and have assured the mayor and council that our only interest is to ensure that water quality standards for any new permit will provide adequate protection of the receiving waters.

The city is current looking at two or three options. It appears the primary one is to upgrade the existing plant. However, some forward-looking councilmen are considering a package plant option and have even considered an option to pipe the wastewater to the Sugar Creek treatment plant in Alex City. My personal choice would be the Sugar Creek option. Since most of the wastewater generated in the watershed ends up in the lake anyway, it seems prudent to send as much of it as possible through a facility that has high treatment standards and does an excellent job of protecting Lake Martin.

There is much more to the issue that I won't debate with you. So I'd suggest that instead of depending on newspapers for your facts, you attend city council meetings and learn about the issue first-hand. They meet the 2nd and 4th Tuesday every month, 5:00 PM, City Hall.

The conspiracy thing is a myth, Kizma. Redleg6 doesn't even live in Sandy Creek..
