I believe the issue with large boats on the lake doesn't have to do with noise or wakes or some of the other reasons posted on the subject. I think the real issue is to keep someone from putting a HUGE house boat on the lake. It doesn't sound like an issue on a lake the size of Lake Martin. However, if someone anchors the boat in front of your house or in your slough because they like the view or the privacy you have or the location or whatever their reason, then you may find yourself with a problem. Think of a floating double wide parked right in front of your dock for the summer months.

And what is to prevent someone from even letting their houseboat beach during the winter months. With the scarcity of lots/homes and some of the lots around the lake going for $700K or more, why buy the lot, when you could spend $700K on a huge floating house and park it right in front of the lot for the cost of a boating sticker every year? You could buy a very nice house boat for the kind of money. It may even come with leveling/stablizing pillars that can be dropped down to anchor the boat permanently just as with a lot of mobile homes that are up on cinder blocks and that no longer have their wheels.

I personally would like to see the size of boats limited to prevent that from happening on Lake Martin. I have seen the size of some of the house boats on Lake Lanier and they are huge. I don't like a lot of laws and rules any more than the next guy, but I would like to see this legislation to protect our lake from this type of invasion.

It is already unlawful for those great big houseboats to be on any land locked lake in the state. Any boat greater than 16' wide (they all are) may not be transported across any road in the state by DOT regulations. There is only ONE boat like this on Lake Martin now and it got here illegally.

When they crafted a bill to prohibit these boats, they really missed the target.

If you have not been around the lake in the past month and seen the HUNDREDS of condos under construction right now, you are in for a huge surprise. No amount of wakes from the so-called 'big boats' will compare to the tsunami that will result if each condo owner also has a boat (and they all will) and drives them on Saturday afternoon (and they all will).

It's going to get real rough out there and this bill will do nothing to prevent it!

Ahh Don,

There you go again! We supporters of this bill don't care about our wakes. Its the wakes of the bigger and faster boats that annoy us. better start getting over it my man. Its a done deal... : Anbody interested in selling me their big, fast, loud boat for my Destin home (wait I don't have one because I chose to buy on an inland lake so I guess I don't need a big, loud, fast boat afterall)

There was aHUGE house boat on the water about 2 weeks ago.
The motor (at idle) was sooooo loud! It made CATS boat seem to purrrr(sorry to single you out, but I just haven't figured out who's boat is who's yet).
It sounded like 2 jet engines, especially with the lake at quiet as it was that day.It sat in the same place for a good while (out front of our place). And yes, the noise was quite a nuisance.

I see your point, and a good one at that.

How would/could someone keep something like that from happening
if something like that ever happened (a big house boat throwing anchor
for thew summer)? I mean, who would/could stop it?

How DID it get on the lake if it is illegal? I thought AL Power or Russell have some kind of satitlite they keep tabs on the lake with.

If you are willing to pay the price you can haul anything anywhere on any road, jsut requires special, costly permits. Ever see a HOUSE being moved!!!!
