Is it a real threat or is the media just hyping it and creating a scare? They are closing schools for 10-14 days when a kid or two comes down wit it. Should they do this?
Or is there something more sinister, and they just don't want to create a panic?
What do YOU think?

Over 20,000 people die in the U.S. from the flu every year. Last I heard, about 150 people in Mexico have died, while tragic, on the grand scheme of things, this is not a big deal, yet.

It's not out of the realm of possibility that this is a carefully manipulated distraction. Take something scary, make it bigger than it really is, and public focus shifts to that and lets up on other (important) issues, i.e., economy, radical legislation, cozying with USA-hating leaders, gift-giving blunders with strong allies, etc. This "distraction" is a gift to the Obama administration. I look forward to observing the development of future distractions to test this theory.

What is somewhat scary about this particular strain is it strikes young adults more that small children and elderly which comprises most of the 30,000 plus deaths each year fromt he flu. The key is whether it becomes a true pandemic and if it mutates into something more virulent. The Obama administration is betting that it is much ado about nothing and I hope they are right. In essence if it becomes a pandemic they will be behind the 8 ball in responding and will likely be open to critics. My sense is that they are right.
What is gratifying is his recognition that the Bush administration put in place really good programs to deal with a pandemic in response to the bird flu concerns.
