We will be closing on our first lake home in early May and will have many questions as we go along. Having stalked this forum for a while now, I feel confident in asking questions/advice of the group. The immediate question is regarding satellite service. I've seen dishnetwork in most of the houses we looked at over the last while so guess it's the most common and best?? Any opinions on the satellite service? Just the first of possibly many questions - please be patient with me (I just bought my first boat too, so more to come on that topic).

Dish network offers local channels at a reasonable price. That's a plus. I wish you had bought my lake cabin but welcome the lake anyway. You're gonna lovit!

We decided on Lake Martin 2 1/2 years ago and it took us this long to find the right place (ultimate retirement home in a couple of years). We knew where we wanted to be, just took 2+ years to get there.

Welcome. You will not be sorry.
Dish service has worked well for me for several years. Lose it sometimes under a big thunderhead, but not always. As a matter of weird fact, at the height of last Friday night's storm, during the hail, rain and wind, we never lost it once! really strange.

I will give you boat driving lessons if you want.

I'll probably take you (or someone) up on that. Luckily, when we get there, the boat will be in our slip. I'm confident I can back it out, just getting back in at a slow pace has me anxious. That plus getting lost on a 44,000 are lake.

Don't ride with CAT unless you like the windblown instant face lift look.

A GPS would be a good idea....and if you let CAT give you boat lessons, make sure you mark a big "L" on his Left hand and a "R" on his right to minimize directional problems; he can't tell where he's going at speeds under 80mph.

Also, I agree with dish

A GPS is on my list of purchases. Also, I bought a pontoon, so I don't think I'll see 80 mph unless we get a tail wind like last weekend when I tried the boat out.

It's a long standing tradition for new lake homeowners to throw a BBQ and beer bash for their forum friends. Please post the date and time you would like for us to show up!

Welcome to the best lake in the south. We looked for about 5 years before we found our ideal lake/retirement home. I have had Charter cable for the last 4 years and I know there are several members of the forum that cuss Chater like a yarddog. I have not had the first problem with Charter and just recently switched my phone service to Charter. Thus far I am ver please with the phone service. Good luck with the new boat and if Cat offered to teach you how to drive a boat, take him up on it. He is the best and he is a pretty good hand at working on them.

What the heck do you need a TV for? Your time should be outside enjoying the lake.

Oh yes it will go 80. If it don't we'll take it back to my shop and give it a good going over.

What area of the lake will you be in?
There is no bad area of Lake Martin it's all great.
Hope you enjoy your new place and welcome to the lake and the forum. Tons and tons of knowledge on here, you just have to listen to a little bs now and then, but even that is a hoot at times.

Welcome to the lake and the forum. Do a search under dish network. You will find a number of posts and suggestions. The use of search on the forum will answer alot of your questions as every topic has probably been covered.

Well, I guess I owe some responses:

1. As a new resident, I can handle the barbeque (since I am an egghead - Big Green Egg cooker. It will take me a while to afford beer after the expense of closing.

2. I guess my pontoon is going to be converted to a "turbo prop"?

3. The address says Jacksons Gap, the map shows close to Blue Creek but the realtor said Sandy Creek (guess I do need a GPS).

4. Thanks for the search tip - plenty of reading material. If I had tried that first, could have eliminated a thread.

Oops, forgot to answer the question regarding why I need a tv. We have season football tickets for the school about 30 miles southeast of the lake. When I'm at the lake and they are away, I want to watch 'em

Welcome to the lake! I hope to be there full time someday.

If you had not started this thread you would have missed all this first hand collective wisdom, Cat's offer of lessons and had fewer folks at your first big event. We are just north of you on the west edge of the Shady Bay area. I love following the channel into Sandy Creek. Other boaters cutting through the islands think I am lost. See ya around the North end!

BTW, War Eagle Anyway!
