Wouldn't "his" day be considered Presidents' Day, just like all of our presidents? Why does he need/get a special day? A paid holiday to boot? I thought holidays were named in honor of people who have done something great for our country. He has done nothing, yet, except get elected. Mother Teresa doesn't even get a holiday and she helped the world!

Associated Press - December 3, 2008 6:34 AM ET

MARION, Ala. (AP) - A Black Belt county in Alabama has created a holiday in honor of President-elect Barack Obama.

The second Monday in November will be "The Barack Obama Day" in Perry County. On that day, county offices will close and workers will get a paid holiday.

County commissioner Albert Turner Jr., who sponsored the measure, said he has mailed copies of the resolution to Obama and his transition team.

The majority of the 12,000 residents who live in Perry County, which is in central Alabama, are black. Almost 73% of the county's presidential votes went to Obama.

How strange is that? Sounds like a made up holiday to get a day off with pay.

Just as Obama fans had hoped. Money for nothing. Unbelievable!

Alarming indeed, but I wouldn't worry too much. Have you ever been to Perry County? Albert Turner Jr. is a criminal and a fool who has sadly lived off the name of his father, a civil rights leader. The most harm this will do is a little more embarrassment for Alabama.

I do believe that is about the most racial thing I have read in some time!!
How is it less of a racial issue for a black person to vote for Hussein Obama (aka Barry Soetoro the muselim) than for a caucasion to not vote for him because he is black?? And why did the media not call them out on it??
And why Hound or GF would you not speak out against it??

And if someone would check I would bet that half the votes came from first time voters, not just ones who reached voting age either

Each year, Alabama celebrates Jefferson Davis's Birthday on the first Monday in June. I have to assume the black population in Perry County decided based on Home rule to celebrate Obama Day. I can't see why any Republican would have a problem with people duly elected making a decision that has no effect on anyone outside the county. I think the people of Alabam need to concern themselves with the low ranking for its educational system and not if employees of Perry County have a holiday.

Maybe, you guys can suggest a George W. Bush holiday to be celebrated on January 19th 2009.

We rich, greedy repubs will go ahead and work on George Bush Day as that is what he would want. Someone has to pay for this eagerly anticipated "Change." As an aside, big difference in celebrating a non-observed, non-paid Jefferson Day as opposed to a paid Obama Holiday. Just my humble opinion.

MONTGOMERY -- Most state offices are closed today because of the official state holiday for the birthday of Confederate President Jefferson Davis.

the real irony is that hardly anyone does get paid anyway in Albert Turner's Perry County. One of the poorest places on earth.

Because this kind of "special day" for the race is getting out of hand. You watch, there will end up being a national day just for BHO. Just as there is a Ms Black America, a black history month, etc. Can you imagine the riots and murders and lawsuits that would happen if whites had a Ms White American, or white history month? Last time I saluted my flag of my country, America, we are all equal and all live in this amazing country. Why does the other race get to have their own seperate honors, holidays, festivals, etc?
This is NOT me being a white racist Republican supremist...it is me asking why them and not us? Why divide the races when we have tried so hard to integrate, accept, and be one nation under God?

That is a disgrace as well. I have been a Georgia resident until recently and I don't recall ever seeing Jefferson Day celebrated there. I could be wrong. Doesn't really matter to me, I don't take off any days celebrating individuals other then those connected with the man upstairs.
