So yes, I do believe in what medical professionals say.....and this one seems really smart to me and not justy because she follows the science like I do.

You continue to miss the point of the regular public wearing a mask when they are unable to stay far enough apart from others.
I agree that almost all masks provide little or no protection for the individual wearing them. The point is that with so many individuals either asymptomatic or presymptomatic, the wearing of a mask makes it markedly less likely to expel the virus out into the atmosphere thereby decreasing transmission to OTHERS. Therefore a empathetic person should wear the best mask they can get their hands on when going out to the market, hardware store etc..
keep bloviating Martini Man. You've almost made me lose my appreciation of a good Martini.

They don't work....but wear them anyway. Exactly the point of this doctor and the NEJM paper. But again, if you have a mask on why should you worry about what others do? You are protected, right? I will restate this for the 57th time, by all means wear a mask early, wear a mask often, wear it driving around by yourself in a car, wear it to a protest, wear it while you're looting.....I don't care and if it makes you feel better or at least keeps the police from identifying you while you're committing a crime then have at it.
As for losing your taste for martini's, put me on ignore before that happens. Life is too short to not have an occasional martini.....although I hesitate to admit that I prefer vodka martini's myself, straight up, chilled like the arctic before global warming with two olives. I know the martini purists will tell me that's no martini and I won't argue with them. Just not as big a fan of gin.

Grey Goose, dirty, with 2 or 3 large blue cheese stuffed olives for me. Morton's Steakhouse makes a great one The mask is optional.

I prefer Kettle One but Grey Goose is a fine substitute. Never dirty for me and I prefer my olives with pimento.....and yes, Mortens does a fine job. My favorite martini place is a little place in Woodland Hills, CA called Monty's Steak House (an old mafia hangout). Had many a fine martini there....sometimes too many martinis.
Gave a martini drinking friend a chef's apron that said the following:
One Martini
Two Martooni's
Twee Martweeni's
Floor
Or my favorite martini joke.
Why are martini's like breasts? One is not enough but three is too many.

Even the best mask that a lay person can get their hands on is only 95% effective on particles down to .3 microns. The SARS CoV-2 measures in at .06 to .14 microns, although it tends to get carried by droplets that have a larger size. Sure, the mask will assist with limiting the field of contamination during a cough or sneeze, but one can spread the virus by simply breathing or talking. Lay individuals are not instructed in appropriate donning and doffing of masks. Empathy will not protect you or I completely in a public location. I would also assume that since COVID has been found in fecal material and that simply flushing a toilet has been found to spread droplets, that either a HEPA filtration unit, UVC light in addition to masking and gloving in the restrooms of public facilities or simply shutting down entirely public restrooms is something you might consider appropriate. We certainly can't be partially empathetic, can we?

Yikes!! Let's just hope everyone is following their CDC social distancing recomendations. Sorta reminds me of the plumbing company billboard on I-65 north of Birmingham.

What makes her "eminent"? She's an ER doc, not an infectious disease specialist. Additionally, she most likely is hiring herself out as an "expert witness" in court cases. Nice try, but no cigar.

I don't think she is angling for "expert witness" fees. The big bucks will be made in the class action lawsuits.

I was at Mortons once and ordered their mushrooms. I exclaimed "your mushrooms are better" to the ex and got some looks.
I prefer the crochet type mask.

You're the one that accused me of not believing medical professionals and yet now that they point out what I already knew, suddenly it's you that refuses to believe doctors. Ironic, eh?
Read her bio....she's way more qualified than you or I. Read the NEJM article, the authors are way more qualified than you or I. Read....and learn. You should wear a mask 24/7 since you think they are so great. As for me, I will wear one only when I have to in order to go somewhere. I will never go along with the sheeple but like I said, wear your mask all the time if it makes you feel better. Like the paper indicated, it reduces anxiety for the ill informed and scientifically illitierate so it does have some benefits.

I was merely pointing out that there is nothing to make her "eminent" as she is not an infectious disease specialist and her bio makes it sound like she is a Dr/lawyer that going around testifying for a fee. BTW, Carlson, I am not suggesting that she plans to testify in cases involving COVID. It doesn't sounds like she on the front lines, so she is just another Dr. with an opinion, and in this case, MM, she happens to agree with yours.
I don't care that you make fun of me for wearing a mask when I go out into public. Doesn't bother me a bit. My focus is on staying healthy, not worrying about you or those like you. I'm perfectly comfortable with my choices, because if I wasn't, I woud do something different.

Don't get me wrong, I am not trying to make fun of you for wearing a mask. I am encouraging you to do so because it obviously makes you feel safer. I just want to make sure people understand the limited value of masks. I went into the post office today to pick up some certified mail forms as the belated tax day is upon us. Almost everyone was wearing a mask and literally none of them were social distancing. They think the mask protects them and they can lessen the other measures. They are wrong. Fortunately for them it probably won't matter because it takes prolonged close contact with an infected person to transmit the virus. Of course we are talking the post office which never moves fast so who knows. I stayed away from everyone because that may actually help. And I can assure you if I were over 65 or had some co-morbidity I would wear an N95 mask and would avoid others like the plague.....pun intended.
