Don't forget that Merkle is from the wrong side of the wall and is still of the old Soviet mindset, much like Putin.  I have been watching Germany gain power over the EU and they are the economic powerhouse of Europe.  I'm not saying she is anything like Hitler (death camps and atroscities) but I think we have to keep an eye on Germany.  People with a background like Merkle woud like to see Germany rise again....And she has a lot in common philosophically with Putin, who has stated his desire to restore the USSR, and make it a super-power gain.
