Because they like being in the shadows, fear they are unable to study and pass the exam, do not want to put in any effort, feel that it is owed them, have done things that would disqualify them from legally becoming documented, or waiting around on the next mass amnesty bill so they do not have to do anything extra - etc.  pick any one or combination.

I would think that the fear of the deportation / splitting up their happy family would be enough to make them want to at least start the paperwork.

I think you have to meet a criteria to actually be a legal immigrant, and I believe it involves having a sponsor and the ability to prove how you got here, that you have an ability to earn a living with an employer, and a place to live.  If they come legally, they can get a green card.   Why would they want to become citizens if they have been here for years?  Up until now, there hasn't been any penalty for being here illegally.

Tallullah-WHY NOT ?cant believe you ask 'WHY WOULD THEY WANT TO BECOME CITIZENS ?".  SIMPLE to be here legitimately, in the  greatest country ever & is giving them refuge--schooling for their kids, nedical--etc etc etc !! WHY indeed ? your comment  sounds like something  Billary or Bernie would say; there's a proceess in place just for the explicit reason; guess you dont think anyone should show a pic ID to vote either. This FORUM never ceases to amaze me--guess we just open all the doors, send a few C130's & cargo ships & pick up anyone ! then all the retirees here would definitely have to go back to work !

Isn't it as simple as money?  Assuming someone that is not a legal citizen or documented worker does not pay into tax system for wages earned.  They pay on consumption but not on earnings. 

That alone should be enough to convince any tax paying citizen that the system is broken.  Many or most of people complaining likely would say this country would welcome immigrants as long as they go through process and contribute.  Period.

Dont have a problem with someone who comes through proper channels.

If some jackwagon comes onto your property and just starts camping - do you have a right to consider it tresspassing and have law enforcement remove him / her?  In a nation of laws you do, under open borders you are a racist if you do not allow him access to your home for showers and allowed to come inside on cold and rainy nights.  

Not to mention if he gets hurt tripping over a pinecone, you should have to pay his doctor bills and he has the right to sue you because you did not take care of your lawn properly.

If he is using your yard as his personal restroom you get jailed and fined for unsanitary living conditions.

The legal immigration process may take time, and the numbers per year limited - but its better then having the constant worry that your family will be torn apart through deportation.

I took her comment as why would they bother to exert the effort when it was not being required since the previous administration turned the blind eye to existing immigation law and approved of them flooding our country.

Plus with the possibility of Obama / Hillary pushing another round of amnesty then they would get a free ride through the process.

They did not count on the possibility of Trump becoming President and enforcing the laws as they are written, same apparently is going for those states that decided to legalise marijuana.  Its still illegal at the federal level, and now it appears that the new fed policy is to crack down on it.  Sorry new priorities, hope you didnt buy a marijuana dispensory.

The last statement I made was pretty much tongue in cheek.  From their perspective, there hasn't been any reason to pursue legal entry when they had access without going through the process.  Believe me, I lived in Northern VA though the building boom and they showed up in record numbers.  Used to hang out at the local 7-11 looking for day labor jobs, and harassing anyone that pulled in with a truck.  People compained and they had to move off the property.  My sister used to live in Southern Arizona and she used to tell me stories about how clerks in the store would treat people who spoke English rather than Spanish.  She worked with a lot of Mexicans, who, for the most part, only did enough work to get buy, and then looked to file endless grievances for any promotions they didn't get.  The illegals trashed all the hiking trails and my sister/husband, used to hike with a gun, because a lot of these people were criminals.  At night, she would have her driveway used as a hide out from the border patrol; some nights the border patrol parked in her driveway, trying to catch the coyotes bringing them in.  It's not like they are improving things wherever they go.  And I really don't understand people that want to create a "special" citizenship path for them.  They are here illegally and they are criminals.

Didnt ask the little girl down the street for her SSN when she babysat my kids and didnt file it with the government either.  Should have hit her with the 1099-misc.

When my mother hired someone to help her with housework dont recall her asking if she was legal, illegal or going to report her taxes, just word of mouth from a few of her friends that she worked, did a good job and showed up when needed.  I am sure that Puzder did not pick her up at 7-11 or she was going door to door with a bucket asking for work, probably someone he or his wife knew had used this person in that past and they did a good job.

He is CEO of Carl Jr and Hardees. All he had to do was have one of his staff run her name through the same program they use when they hire new employees. Rather, he is a conservative and above the law.

at no point was I defending him, although in your simple mind I am sure any argument against you seems as such.  

1. He admited it - so yup his is not a democrat - they would still be lying, cheating and would never pay up back taxes.

2. As for a Dem who has hired an illegal - we would have more in jail then we have drug dealers, rapists etc.  Just like with the deportations - start with the ones who have really screwed up, not I hired a housekeeper years ago and when I learned of her status ended it, corrected the tax problems, filed necessary paperwork and even attempt to get her square with legal status.
