Read the article in the link and see if you don't feel a little angry that people who probably don't live or visit the lake are questioning our Marine Police's efforts.  To those of you in the SeaArk's I proudly say thank you!  While the rest of us were out on the water cruising and having fun on Sunday (or any other day for that matter) you were out in a hot uniform, and a hot boat keeping us safe.  For some yahoo in Montgomery to question your ability to respond to an accident in a "timely" manner is insulting.  Most of us were having dinner with our friends and family and you were just tying up for the night to go home and get some rest before having to be back on Monday for another toiling day in a hot uniform in a hot boat.

Officer Buchanan, I don't know where you live, but to get a call from a dispatcher, get into uniform, travel to the marina, get to your boat and be on scene in 20 minutes is remarkable.  It took an hour & a half for Elmore to respond to a burglary in progress at my neighbors earlier this year.  After calling 911 about the thugs in the neighbors house, I sat helplessly by and watched them load the car and drive off, then waited over an hour for deputies to arrive.

Yes we need more officers, but I'd be willing to bet that if surveyed most everyone on this forum would opt for better roads around the lake before more officers.  If you do the math according to the article, we are without any patrols on the water more than half the time.  I am happy to know that in an emergency situation these officers respond from home to assist us.

Again, I say thank you for a job well done to the Marine Patrol Officers!

I can understand how this article might be seen as criticism of the individual officer but in reality it is a call to action concerning the absence of critically needed resources on all of Alabama's waterways.  The state is failing in its responsibility to protect its citizens as is their function.

You can blame who you wish,. excessive spending on less important projects, lack of revenue, a faulty tax system, or just plain absence of good sense.  The fact is we could all have been that unfortunate young woman as could our family and friends we so dearly love to host at the lake.

That's what ticks me off!

I thought it was a reasonable article.  I didn't see it as an indictment of the local Marine Police or Marine Police in general, but more as just a report on law enforcement shortages due to the current economic downturn/tax shortfall.  While the death over the weekend is an extreme tragedy, accidents are going to happen regardless of the number of officers on patrol.  Thanks again to the officers of the District III Marine Police for all that they do to keep our lake a safer place to enjoy.

Toon--Let's say, hypothetical, that you were an unarmed neighbor.  The house next door is being burglarized by multiple suspects.  What would have been your plan of attack?

As for the article, I believe our Marine Police do an excellent job when it comes to marine safety.  I suppose in a perfect world, we would have 24-7 patrols by police, fire, and medics.  I remember the "good old days" when passing boaters' would wave to each other.  In those days, a boater could count on one another for assistance no matter the situation.  I have towed in numerous stranded boaters, helped with a forest fire, and even helped extinguish a boat fire.  Let's all go back to the days of "good Samaritans" and help our emergency personnel out with OUR safety.

Toon, would you cross open ground to confront at least 2 criminals at 3:00 in the morning by yourself?  If so, I hope your insurance is paid up.

I'm glad your not my neighbor too.

Unarmed? Well there's your problem... If the house being robbed has a landline - call it, chances are there is an answering machine with call screening - leave a message "sorry 'state homeowner's name' this is Guido, had a fight with the wife, need to talk, me and Butch will be there in about 10 minutes, I have that .45 that you were interested in, and will sell it cheap."

I’m acting as the newspaper’s unofficial ombudsman here because I’m afraid this article was misunderstood.

I heard rumors earlier this week that people were concerned about the emergency response time to Sunday’s accident. I called around, but I didn’t find any concrete complaints. However, I did find that two Montgomery media outlets reported – key word here, they didn’t accuse – that strained resources could have affected the response.

Anyway, I thought that gave me an interesting opportunity to look into the marine police. What I found was, like many businesses and families in Alabama, the agency is struggling because of the economy. I spoke to several helpful marine police officers and learned a lot, such as the fact that they also perform homeland security duties and that they don’t expect to make new hires until 2014.

It’s been an interesting and sad story and we’ll continue to follow new developments, if there are any.

I write for The Record, The Outlook and Lake Magazine and I usually enjoy feedback from readers. If you ever have questions or comments, feel free to email me directly at katie.cole@alexcityoutlook.com.

Thanks for reading.

This is so sad but the bottom line is if the officer had been on scene at the time of the accident, the outcome would have been the same.  The person needed a trauma unit not a police officer.

You people need to realize that this is not the city,
#1 these countys are not incorporated
#2 the people that live here on a permanent basis dont want them incorporated , therefore there is no local police , unless you live in alex city , dadeville , ETC.
#3 there are no paid fire / rescue departments , they are volunteer departments , most not very well equiped or trained.
most folks that live around this area , know how to take care of themselves , because we know that the sheriffs office, marine police , fire depts, are going to be awhile getting there , when something happens , for instance, i catch someone breaking into my house , that is where the S.O. IS GOING TO FIND THEM ! , if i see a neighbors house getting broke into i will hold the perps at gun point till the S.O. gets there , if my house is on fire i will salvage what i can until the F.D. gets there , if i see a wreck happen i will stop and render assistance , until help arrives, in this day and time , you have to be prepared , and depend on yourself , not big brother.
also self preservation , and common sense tells me that if i am on a boat, the operater will not be drinking , and that everyone will remain seated while the boat is in motion.
in addition, with these volunteer dept. there is not someone sitting at the station waiting to go, they have to leave work/home to get to the station, crank the trucks, gear up & then travel to the scene. so if you want faster emergency service you either need to move or stay in the city. or learn how to take care of yourself.
this is the way we live and common sense does prevail. didn't mean to step on anybodies toes. BEARTRAPPER

The funny thing about online boards is that they are clogged with insults and slights hurled by people hiding behind anonymous screen names. There is actually a psycological term for it called, “the online disinhibition effect”; and its fairly well documented that the more anonymous we can be the more freely we'll belittle others. I'm not really the psychoanalyzing type, but my gut tells me that the people throwing around insults on online boards are probably just champion level BS'ers and not much else.

Me personally, I'm probably what the liberals would consider 'armed to the teeth', but to most of you, I'd just be a normal Southerner. I like to think that I wouldn't hesitate to shoot someone if they were coming in my house. However if I think about it honestly and objectively, I'm pretty sure I would not cross open ground alone, outnumbered, and unarmed to confront 2-3 burglars (thats not bravery, thats stupidity).

I'd be willing to bet, after experiencing something like that next door, he isn't unarmed anymore.

I don't think Beartrapper is all that anonymous on here.  If you read all his posts, it would be real easy to figure out who he is and what he does. He's a good man to have on your side and I wouldn't be surprised one bit to see him holding criminals at gunpoint.....or explaining to the sheriff why they are on his floor with a few new holes in their body. I don't think he was trying to belittle anyone, but he did state some facts of rural living.

Amen, Trapper. We continue to have an influx of city folks that expect things to be like a suburb of Atlanta. If some would take the time to learn what to do, how to take care of themselves and the lake, we would all be better off. However, some are thinking they can carry on just like always and wonder about us, that have been on rivers and lakes most of our lives. To them, we are the ones they look curiosly upon. Now I'm not talking about all or even most of them. But there sure seems to be a disconnect that gets worse every year. It's understandable that a lot of people who have been on the lake for years now have their property for sale or listed with a broker. Now I'm not saying the uninformed should be packing heat. As a matter of fact, it would not make me feel very comfortable if they did.
