Everyone running for any office in the State and Federal level should sign a promise to promote and vote for term limits. Sen. Byrd is a prime example that term limits should be in effect. You should only be able to be elected to 2 terms and thenhave to  sit out one term before running again. If you were a good servant of the voters you would be reelected. To receive the pension and all life time benefits you must serve three terms. This would save the taxpayers money but would still reward a good politician. This should be one of the deciding points in the upcoming elections in Nov. and even politcians not running this fall should have to agree to only one more term and then they also have to sit out a term before running again. Just my thoughts but could stop some of the career politicians. This would not apply to the lifetime two term limit on the President.

I so agree with you. Senator Byrd is a prime example of why there should be term limits.

While I agree with term limits, the house may be 3 or 4 terms and the senate 2.  I would also agree with a single 6 year term for the president (except this one).

Term limits is always an interesting issue -I would contend that we already have a Term Limits mechanism, ---it's called "reelection." If teh voters don't like their elected officials, they can vote them out. Hopefuly we'll see this play out in 2010 and 2012. -I think Senator Byrd represents a different issue, i.e., "age limitations." I would suppot an amendment that says anyone over 80 could not be elected to the congress or teh presidency

What I was thinking was that employees in the private sector are not fully vested in less than tens years usually. Why should elected politicians  get lifetime benefits for only two terms. Can't agree with the six year term for President though because what if we ever ended up with another one like this one..... four years is too long for some.

How about a MANDATORY retirement age like they arbitarilly impose on others? Airline pilots comes to mind. There should be NO RETIREMENT benifits from ANY elected office other than SS like the rest of us depend on. Of course tehy aren't worried about retirement, they just 'work' till they fall over dead. I heard yesterday that K.K.K Byrd was basically living in the hospital these last months. They would get him up and dress him and send him off to 'work' each day and then he came back to the hospital at night. How do I get an insurance plan like that?

Lifer ..I agree with you on the age limit also...at many of the meetings in Congress I have seen many asleep...Wouldn't we get fired for sleeping on the job?

Well, I was thinking more about his years in the Senate made him a very powerful man. The longer you serve, the more important committees that are eligible to chair. But, I can agree with the age limit too. I find it hard to believe that at 92 he was personally doing much legislating. Appears to me that he was just being wheeled into the chamber to vote.

They showed a clip of him making his last vote about 2 weeks ago. I wasn't sure he wasn't dead then. He certainly didn't look alive.

I doubt he even had the mental capacity to tell you what he was voting on as he 'voted'. The really appalling thing is the difference between his and Strom Thurmonds obits in the MSM. Google up the two of them as published in the NYT, both written by the same guy, and tell me there is no bias.
