If you haven't taken yourself or your family to Horseshoe Bend National Military Park just north of Dadeville and Alex City, about 15 minutes from each, you are missing a treat. We took kids 9 and 4 1/2 there two days ago for a picnic and hiked/walked the 2.8 mi nature trail. It is a beautiful trail and there were places to stop along the way to learn about the battlefield (and where the 4 yr old could rest a minute). The museum was also nice. I can't imagine a better time and there is no charge to get in the park.

You should plan a trip sometime when they are doing reenactments with period correct garb and weaponry.
