She is ok. The boat is adrift with a broken mast, but Abby is alive and well.

What kind of IDIOT parents would allow their 16 year old daughter to try something like that. Simply child abuse.

Waiting on help. Damaged mast that killed her phone.

Quote from her father that I agree with completely.

"Sailing and life in general is dangerous. Teenagers drive cars. Does that mean teenagers shouldn't drive a car?" Laurence Sunderland told the AP. "I think people who hold that opinion have lost their zeal for life. They're living in a cotton-wool tunnel to make everything safe."

I agree 100% with her father....seems there are a lot of folks that would like to run the lives of others, but that's not what living free is all about.

I've known a lot of 16 year olds that were more mature than a lot of other "adults" who happen to also be parents.

Age is just a number.

Her brother Zac was the youngest to accomplish the feat and she was trying to break his record. I am not going to pass judgement on her parents allowing her to try but I wonder if they are prepared or have insurance to reimburse the cost of the planes, ships, and man hours in her rescue? If someone wants to live on the edge they should not expect society to pay for their injuries or rescue.

To me, it is the same with those who refuse to wear helmets on a motorcycle or seat belts in a vehicle. Don't expect society to pay to change your feeding tubes and your diapers.

Yes, people should be held responsible for their actions when they impact others. I would hope they have insurance for such contingencies; I certainly would.

She is floating adrift somewhere between Australia and the African Island of Madagascar. The waters of the Indian Ocean aren’t known to be particularly safe recently and not to mention it is winter time there and the seas (especially in the southern waters where she is now) are legendarily rough. For those of you who are geographically challenged the Indian Ocean is where the ‘Somali pirates’ have been running amuck for years. These attacks are by no means limited to the waters around Somalia. There is an old saying “worse things happen at sea”, and they really do! Keep in mind there is no politically correct Socialist Republic of Kalifornia there to protect your rights when you are adrift at sea. If my 16 year old daughter were taken hostage in the Indian Ocean, held for ransom (at best), and generally used as a sex toy for a bunch of filthy pirates… all because I my ‘zeal for life’ separated me from my common sense. I would never be able to forgive myself.

Yes there is a risk involved in every single aspect of life and you shouldn’t stop living your life because of it. But (I hope) we all know some activities are more risky than others.

Imagine a fine line between bravery and idiocy. I’d say Abby Sunderland is one very brave girl. However, in my opinion, her parents are standing on the other side of that line.

Well opinions are like various body parts, everybody has one. My opinion is different so we will have to agree to disagree.

I'm guessing who's paying for all this....the taxpayers of the countries loolking for her. The solution is simple.

I'm sure there is an international sailing federation of sorts that could coordinate and estimate rescue plans. Then I think she should have her parents or sponsors post a bond equal to the cost of this kind of recovery to pay for it.

I wondered about the piracy thing myself.
Regardless of how capable and mature kids are, sometimes their judgement that of an adult. Don't forget how Natalee Halloway was taken in my a cute guy in Aruba, got into a car and gone forever.

I'm not someone who believes that the world has to be made safe, and that kids shouldn't be permitted to have adventures consistent with their abilities. But, I'm not sure I would allow my teenaged daughter to shove off in a sailboat for the other side of the world alone.
