surprised at how much water was in my gas

Contacted Cathouse last week and picked my boat up today. There was nothing wrong with it - I just wanted an enine tune up, new plugs, lower unit oil change, etc. Since my boat is 15 years old, I asked Steve to drain the fuel tank and make sure there was no debris in it. I didn't really think about there being water in the tank - I was just looking to do some preventive maintenance. Steve called earlier and said I had a lot (approx quart) of water in the bottom on the tank. I am a fanatic about using Stabil every time I put gas in the tank but since this is probably the first time in 15 years the tank was drained, I am really not surprised now that I think about it. He suggested and I quickly agreed without hesitation to put a fuel filter in-line. Steve and Mike mounted it inside the bilge. Gonna keep using Stabil, though. As far as possible sources for the water, well condensation over 15 years is the first thought. Also, I don't run away from a good rainstorm when I go fishing (lightning, yes - rain, no) so I am sure I get some water through the fuel tank vent on the side. Also, I gotta admit that I don't watch the back wash as closely as I should when I set the boat down from being on plane - will try to be more aware of that from now on, though. Will need to replace the fuel filter once a year.
Cathouse really takes the time to make sure things are right - they want you to enjoy your boat. And, they seem to have the philosophy that they hope everything goes well with your boat, but they are there if you ever need them. That's a good outlook, in my opinion. Same philosophy my Dad had in his business for 40 years.
Thanks again Steve, DeeDee and Mike!!

That is why I am willing to pay more and buy gas only at marinas displaying ethanol free. I just don’t trust all the stations around the lake advertising ethanol free. I also put in Marine Sta Bil and Yamaha Free Ring each time. At the beginning of the season all filters should be changed. You really need to have a water seperator installed between the gas tank and the engine.

That is exactly what we put in, a water seperator/fuel filter. They do work very well. Ala Angler, your business is appreciated!

Steve, what happens when one of those water separator filters reaches its absorptive capacity of water. Does it stop the flow to the engine, or does it let water pass through?

It passes through, but usually, the engine completely quits, rather than try to digest water. When the filter fills up, all it can live on is water. If you change it every year, it is never a problem, unless you get really shitty gas.

Sounds like the kind that one can use to make porcelain art... Just make sure you are sitting on a Dallas Cowboy's hat brim when you get creative or you may end up with a mess to clean up.

of that gas in Mexico City a few years back......
