I just moved to the Lake Martin area from Mobile. After becoming highly addicted to bowfishing on the delta, I really don't want to stow away all my equipment!! Has anyone ever bowfished Lake Martin? I talked to a game warden a few weeks ago and he told me that there is a big grass flat north of Coley Creek where the carp usually congregate during the spring. I scoped it out and it looked pretty good! Any info will help!
Thanks, Ivan Roslak

I have a friend that has a boat set up with the lights, platform, etc all for bowfishing and we have gone up there and tried our luck at bowfishing up the river. With that being said we have not done that well any of the times that we have gone there. We generally bowfish the alabama river since there is a lot more habitat and carp in the river system. During the spring will be about the best time for you to have luck up river for some big carp but be prepared to wait long intervals between shots as it is nothing like bowfishing in the delta or up north on guntersville.

There are plenty of flats up in the Little Kowaliga area. In the spring when I fish in the backs of the creeks to escape the wind, I always see carp.

Yeah I'm not expecting it to be as good as the delta..but it will be better than nothing! Where is the little kowaliga area? is that on the far west branch? I'm in Auburn so I mainly fish Sandy creek or up around the 280 bridge.

We are up river above Coley Creek and definitely see them move in during the spring, and they hit the grass flats very hard when they are mating. Now I don't now the difference in the types of carp. Can you bowhunt both the common carp and grass carp?
I think its around the full moon in either April or May that we usually see them going crazy in the shallows.
I'd actually love to try it out with you sometime. Give me a shout if you line up a weekend to do it. Or shoot me an email with your email/phone number, and I'll contact you when I see them kick into high gear.

Yes, it is the far west side closest to Montgomery. It is shallower up in there, which explains the flats. BTW, have you ever tried using a rod and reel on carp? Catching a big bugle mouth on ultra light gear and 2 pound line is a blast.

Any type of carp is fair game. Its legal to shoot anything that isn't considered a game fish. Some people do eat them...not me though haha..i've tried everything..grilling..baking..smoking..i just cant seem to acquire a taste for them..In Mobile we'd just leave them for the gators. I wouldn't do that on a lake though.
