The Fallacy of Background Checks for Gun Purchases

My son went to a gun show recently and left in disgust. There was a significant number of shady-looking characters there, lined up to buy handguns. As soon as they picked one out they turned around to their female partner and had the female fill out the paperwork for the background check.
The background check might work if the true purchaser of the gun submits the request, but what my son witnessed was a gross mis-use that probably resulted in the gun ending up in the hands of someone who could never get approval on their own.

Not surprising that this is happening and I have to wonder if the gun was for the woman. I know if I went to a gun show with my wife for her to get a handgun I would have to walk her through the entire process. But if it was a sham purchase the woman committed a felony and probably has no idea she is putting herself in serious legal jeopardy.
What is even more interesting is all the stories lately about liberals trying to buy guns and complaining how onerous and difficult it was to get one purchased. They were amazed how challenging it was compared to what they see all time in the media.

Totally illegal if it was a straw purchase. Agree with everything both you guys said but it is NOT a lack of laws or regulations that control such transactions that allowed this to happen, it was/is an enforcment issue. We have local PD's (for now anyway), Local sherriffs offices, State Troopers, ABI, and I'm sure another state agency or two. Then at the federal level we have FBI, ATF, Federal Marshalls, and I'm sure a couple more of them I'm overlooking. The problem is none, or at least obviusly not enough of them, were present where it seems they are needed most.

Far more illegal guns are stolen or bought from the trunk of a car. One way these perps harvest guns is late at night they walk thru neighborhoods checking to find unlocked doors and anything of value inside. I think they checked me once. They leave the door open afterwards to keep from making noise. Remember to lock your doors!

I seem to recall that one of the questions on the FFL is that the gun is for your personal use - since straw purchases are illgeal, as Lifer points out. The thing is that you can lie on the form, but there really isn't much recourse that has been done for lying on the form. We don't need more gun laws, we just need them to enforce the ones that exist. But as someone else correctly pointed out - if you want a gun, you will get a gun, because there is no FFL requirement on person to person purchases. One need only look at Chicago to see this is true. Additionally, in states that has the 3 day hold on handguns purchases - if the background check doesn't respond within the day waiting period, then the gun dealer can complete the pruchase.
