A friend, driving home from a fishing trip in northern Michigan with his boat in tow, had engine trouble a few miles inland from Lake Huron. He didn't have his cell phone, so he decided to use his marine radio to get help. Climbing into his boat, he broadcast his call letters and asked for assistance. A Coast Guard officer responded, "Please give your location."
"I'm on Interstate-75, two miles south of Standish."
The officer paused, "Could you repeat that?"
"I-75, two miles south of Standish."
A longer pause. Then an incredulous voice asked, "How fast were you going when you hit shore?"

About 10 years ago I was boating in the Gulf with friends. We had for safety pulled into a protected inlet with marina to escape a fast closing squall. While waiting with the radio squawking we heard a woman's request to the Coast Guard for advice. She was about 3 miles off shore with divers down and no way to get them to surface to flee the storm. The Coast Guard told her to stay put that the storm was fast abating and she would be fine as long as she was at anchor in the shallow water. She responded she didn't know if she was anchored. The Guardsman supressed a a laugh and described the look and likely location of the anchor. She thanked him and signed off. A few seconds later the radio crackled and the Coast Guard came back on "You did say you have divers down." "yes 2 guys." "Well better let that anchor down real slow."
