were going to start a new school, open a new business, or embark on any other endeavor in which you wanted to be able to excel in the eyes of your competitors, where would you turn to recruit people to be a part of your new brainchild? As I understand your mindset, you  would not be overly concerned about being selective in trying to recruit the best qualified individuals, but would have people from around the world who want to come to America enter a lottery from which you would draw your "new" employees. I would think you would be as concerned about acquiring the best employees available for your new endeavor just as President Trump is "trumpeting" his efforts to "Make American Great Again". If you provide a response, please don't try to and feed me the same "bull" about what Obama has done as you normally do

When your grandparents or great one immigrated to this country, were they wealthy or successful as a professional ? Mine were poor and came here to better their life. Go to Arlington Cemetary and walk around  and read the monuments to see all the children of recent immigrants who have died for your freedom. Tell their parents that they did not deserve to come to this great country cause they were not the brightest and best. 

And no, I don't support open borders.

Most of the people on this forum look at it the same way as Buteye...they are unable to fathom that there is a difference between an individual hiring somebody to be a clerk or accountant, or prepare a contract or unclog a toilet; and how this great nation fulfills its promise to humanity.  They would gladly give the Statue in NY harbor back to the French.

Let's put things into perspective. The timeframe you reference is totally different from where America finds itself today. America was building as a country and was not experiencing the kinds of forces that are acting today that are being used to divide us as a Nation. We were not being overrun with uncontrollable immigration. Immigration between 1870 and 1900was during the rise of Industrial America,  the largest number of immigrants continued to come from northern and western Europe including Great Britain, Ireland, and Scandinavia. These immigrants were becoming one of the most important forces in American life while immigration from Asia and Latin America was much more limited and controversial. As a point of interest, the immigrant population(legal and illegal) hit a record 43.7 million in 2016. Between 2000 and 2016 18.7 million immigrants settlled in America.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                           For the last several years our borders have been flooded by immigrants(legal and illegal) with no concern about how "citizens" of this country are affected because we have no "rational" policy on controlling immigration based upon how it contributes to the "well being" of America. Democrats are only interested in bringing in as many immigrants as possible so they can "play and control" them the same as they do blacks in order to "gain" their vote.  If you are a Democrat and will not "admit" that is your modus operandi, I suggest you read an article written by "black" publisher Lloyd Marcus titled "Blacks Still Played and Controlled by Tired Old Democratic Paradigms".(Lloyd Marcus.com)

That is what you, 95% of this Forum,  and Trump want....white immigration. I sense that those 95% on this Forum  would have no problem if 10 million whites arrived on our shores next year as potential supporters of racist policies and the GOP.

You don't seem to have a problem as millions of immigrants(legal or illegal) come in to this country regardless of the detrimental affect it has on our own citizens who are searching for jobs, and the cost to we the taxpayers for welfare and medical 

support, additional costs that are placed on providing additional education support, the added workload placed on law enforcement, the increased endangerment resulting from more criminals and drug traffickers, and the list goes on. All this so you Democrats can increase your presence at the polls. It is almost unbelievable the willingness of Democrats to ignore all the negatives just to gain a vote.

   We need to be as careful about letting someone in our country as one would be letting someone in your house. They need to have a skill to work here and support themselves. They need to be able to integrate into our society not turn this country into a s...hole as it was so correctly described. FRIENDS OF MINE WHO HAVE COME TO THIS COUNTRY THIS WAY LOVE IT MORE THAN WE DO! They have seen the elephant!

   Yes there are countries that are s...holes. They are s...holes because the people there behave in a manner that causes them to be s...holes.  If enough of them come here and behave as they did in the "old country" then they can vote Democrooks and we can become become s....holes too! THAT IS OUR CHOICE! In fact the Democrooks have admitted that their only future is  in importing huddled ,dependent poorly educated massed to out vote Americans by telling  them the Republicans will cut off their bennies and they will follow  them like lemmings!

Buteye, and the two liberal idiots......The huge difference between early immigrants and recent immigrants is new immigrants want to come here to get all the free dimokrap krap...food, housing, healthcare, education, etc.  My ancestors arrived in the mid-1700s with no benefits available, no freebies.....only a chance to better themselves.  If the dimokraps cared about the country they would help cut off the freebies to legal and illegal immigrants.  Got news for ya'll....we don't owe any immigrant from anywhere anything.  Come here legally and get the same opportunity our ancestors enjoyed....hard work, struggle, live free.  Living on the dimokrap plantation ain't the opportunity they need.

Well said! I say what's wrong with telling the truth and saying it like it is? It is shameful what the "big" city managers(Democrats) have done to the people in major cities around the country. The "managers" in the following ten cities are responsible for their designation as the ten poorest(poverty stricken) cities in the United States: Detroit, Buffalo, Cincinnati,Cleveland, Miami, St. Louis, El Paso, Milwaokee, Philadelphia, and Newark). What can be more revealing about Democrats "inept" leadership than listing of cities?

When the biggest influx of aliens came here, they had income earing skills.  Things like masons and stoneworkers and farmers, and electricians and bakers, etc.  This country did not have a welfare system, so if you had problems making ends meet, you had to depend on family or the church to get you over a rough patch.  And this was considered an embarassment to be "on the dole".  My grandmother on my mother's side came from Ireland as a young girl as a maid for a wealthy family.  That's right - you had to be sponsored and have job prospects.  A late friend that came over with his family as political refugees, in the mid-1950's.  They had to have a guarenteed place to live and jobs to go to.  They were "sponsored" by family that was already here.  They lived in a very poor section in NYC.  My friend worked and helped to support the family with after school jobs and indeed worked his entire way through college.  They counted on family, not the USG for support.  There were no "ESL" classes.  

I don't see anything wrong with maintaining a standard for the immigrants we allow into this counntry.

There you go again using your "sense" to tell 95% of us what we would do. To set you straight, I don't care where immigrants come from, what color their skin is, etc. as long as they possess the will and desire to mold into our society and accomplish the expectations and accomplishments that we want our own children to achieve. Check what Tallullahound has described as what early requirements immigrants were required to meet to be accepted into their new country.

Buteye I think just maybe you get it! Your opinion expressed in the first part of your post almost exactly matches mine but it sure does not align with our current president's nor, in my opinion, many of the other posters on this forum.  The may claim they think the same but in their heart of hearts they, our president and his base have a completely different agenda.  If you do not agree with me then ask a cross section of Trump's ''base'' for an honest assessment.  They will gladly say they want to cut off entry to ALL Mexicans, Muslims, Africans and dark skinned people in general.  A Muslim with a PHD and a Nobel Prize is no more welcome than a rabid rat!

I submit for consideration WIX's post below...addressed specifically to you and the ''two liberal idiots''...to justify and defend my opinion.

BTW: Some of Hounds statements are fact, some are not...many legal immigrants had neither a sponsor, job or place to live when they arrived.  Of course those were very different times with different needs...in the late 1800s and early 1900s the nation and railroads were expanding west, western lands were opening up to be settled, industry was booming in the growing cities.  Today our workforce is shrinking while job openings often go unfilled, many new job opportunities are opening up without Americans to do the work, Social Security has fewer payers vis a vis payees, etc.  But, banning immigrants is not new...for decades no Chinese were admitted...they came from a sh!thole country!!

This segment of posts began with the subject, "Architect, if you...." to which you didn't respond to my post but responded to your buddy GoneFishin "Well stated". From there I heard nothing from you until today when you said, " Buteye I think just maybe you get it!  Your opinion expressed in the fitst part of your post almost exactly matches mine....". I would still like to know how you would go about selecting employess for whatever your new endeavor might be. I will never agree  with you that we should flood our borders with iimmigrants regardless of any qualifications that they might have to fill a bona fide job opening.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                       I think Old Diver provides an excellent summation on how we should approach the problem of immigration with his post "Get Real". Since we all have "opinions", it would be interesting to know your opinion on his post.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                               While not on the subject of immigration, I made a post yesterday about the 37 year old woman in Tampa who has 15 children and is "complaining" that the government is not giving her enough food and money to deal with her children. She was evicted from her residence by the Tampa Housing Authority because she owed $6000 in rent. Because of our liberal welfare system she is being moved into a six bedroom home to accomodate a problem that she has brought upon herself and her children who are suffering from her lifestyle. Why should workers, many who are working two jobs and paying for childcare for their children while they work, be saddled with paying taxes to support a welfare system(created by Democrats) that is responsibe for the types of deplorabe situations mentioned here? Since you are big on offering opinions, would you be willing to give your opinion on this subject?
