I have a pontoon boat that has the blue lights under the rail on each side as well as transom under water blue lights on each tube. I have asked around and can't seem to get a consensous. I have experienced more than once, the water patrol pass close by at night and I had both sets of lights on with no problem. I have also been told by the marina's that they have had customers get tickets for the side lights being on and just heard yesterday that a customer got a ticket for the underwater transom lights. If someone actually knows the law, I would appreciate your answers to the following:

1. Can the under the rail side lights by on while underway (mounted under floor & shine down on the toons)?

2. Can the under water transom lights be on while underway?

Thanks in advance for your answers.

Call the Marine Police at 256-329-2268. What is the purpose of the lights shining on the tubes? As you are aware, lights at night while underway can be confusing to others.

Thank you for the reply. They were factory installed by Harris, so my assumption would be for greater visibility. The strobes that people are adding to the back of their boat are the most distracting thing I have seen on the lake.

I will give them a call

This is a post from Capt. Brooks about the same question last year.  I'm not sure if their position has changed on the subject?

I wish there was a simple answer to give you, but this new trend is not specifically addressed by current statutes other than the following: no vessel other than a law enforcement vessel may display any blue light in an oscillating, flashing or rotating pattern. Navigation lights (the red and green lights or what are commonly called bow lights) must be screened so that they are visible in a 225-degree arc (112.5 degrees on each side). The red and green navigation lights and the all-around white light (or stern light) must be visible for two miles. Over the past couple of years we have stopped vessels because the LED lights drowned out or prevented the required navigation lights from being seen. In one case the individuals had basically replaced their red and green navigation lights with red and green LED tube lights that extended along the entire length of the hull - the result being that from behind you could see all three lights, which is supposed to be what you see when a vessel is approaching you from dead ahead. Some people also thought that the LED lights (in this case blue tube lights along both sides) were a replacement for their navigation lights. I can tell you that in a congested area at night having them on when underway can create confusion. The purpose of the red and green lights are to give a vessel's direction and to indicate right of way - the LED lights are so bright that they make it difficult to do so at times. For that reason we recommend that only the required navigation lights be displayed when underway. To summarize: 1. Blue lights (or other LED lights) can be displayed while underway or while stationary as long as they don't block your regular navigation lights and don't rotate, flash or oscillate (strobing is the same as flashing in this case). 2. LED accent lighting does not relieve a vessel operator of the responsibility for displaying the required navigation lights. I look for this to be an issue that the Coast Guard will weigh in on in the near future. Unfortunately, a lot of decisions made regarding regulations and laws are done so with data provided from accidents. Hopefully, this will be preventive and not reactive in nature.

I think the issue is the marine industry is following the requirements of generally accepted international maritime rules and the US Coast Guard rules.  These rules work fine in intercostal and offshore waters where boaters are trained, but problems arise when ignorant operators are operating boats.  If you've run boats in the intercoastal waterway at night and seen tugs with tows running spot lights looking for markers, you know there is nothing illegal with lighting on boats.  On the lake, running with lights under the deck or underwater, may look a little silly to some, but is likely not illegal.  Even running with docking lights only shows a lack of courtesy for other boaters. The use of strobe lights distinguishes a boat from home/dock lights along the bank and serves a valuable purpose, I think.  Best advice I follow....find something better to do around the lake after dark than risking you life!

Big difference is that the strobes don't negatively affect night vision.  I find the boats with all the extra lights particularly problematic at night because the red, green, and white lights get lost in all the"cool" lights that folks like you want to put on your boats.  Not as much a problem as the idiots who insist on using their docking lights in the middle of the lake, but still distracting.

Actually MrHodja, Its not people like me that are installing the extra lights, it is the Boat manufacturer, which in my case is Harris. This would leave one to reason that manufactuers see a demand in the additional lighting and are attempting to meet that demand.

I did also go to Harris website and look at all the options they offer. They have 40+ lines of options and not a single one of them is a seizure causing white strobe light for the rear of your boat. I totally disagree if you think those peel and stick strobes that some owners are installing is a good idea. To recap, under water transon lights and side toon lights are factory installed systems by most manufactures. Seizure inducing stick on white strobes are not avaiable from the manufacture but can added by the owner that cares nothing about the people behind them at night.

I didnt want to debate wheteher the lights are cool or not and I am certainly not worried about appearing as such. I just simply wanted to know what the law was for accesories installed on my boat by the factory. I will call the Marine Police as suggested

TowBoat - Thank YOU for the re-post from last year.

What is seizure causing about a strobe?  I am curious because they don't affect my night vision, they are readily visible, and once located it is easy to determine which direction the boat is heading.  Is a seizure really a potential occurrence?  Serious question.

The post from Capt Brooks was excellent.  After reading here is how I feel about operating my Harris at night.

A.  I probably will not use the side blue lights on my Harris while cruising to or from a place at night.

B.  I probably will use my rear underwater lights.  Reason, I don't have a strobe but I don't want some idiot running over me like has happened with horrible results on Lake Martin and other lakes.  I don't see a problem with strobes either.  They are on most all airplanes and I don't think any pilots have crashed due to disorientation, seizures or other alleged blinding from a strobe.  I'd rather be seen as best as possible and a proper strobe is a good idea if you operate much at night.  Some anchor lights are hard to distinguish between a stationary light on the shore and a boat that is just floating in the dark.

C.  I agree dock lights are a bad thing on the lake if they are used while operating, cruising, etc., unless approaching a dock or trying to land the boat and needing light.  They have been on boats for years and mostly are used properly, except for some pontoon owners who think they are like a car headlight!

D.  I'm really more concerned with the number of boats I see running after sunset without any lights, including some waverunners/jetskis. They need the ticket more than anyone.  And, I agree, stay off the lake at night unless you are going from or to someone's home or returning from dinner at any of the fun places on our great Lake Martin.

Great post and thanks for bringing this discussion to Light!  Can't wait to see who says what and continues the debate.

Well said, and exactly the type of common sense I was speaking about (concerning gray areas) in my post above. The one thing I dislike about underwater lights is that they come out of the water on some boats in waves/wakes and "flash" very brightly....this can be blinding and disorienting for other boaters (when I've seen it happen, it's much brighter than a strobe)....not all do this, but something to think about.

A small number of people with epilepsy have what is called photo sensitive epilepsy. Very rapid strobe lights can trigger a seizure in people with this disease. Boat strobes are typically much slower in flash pattern.....I believe anyone claiming that a boat strobe would trigger this disease is doing such for dramatic effect....statistically, there is a chance a boat strobe could trigger a seizure but the odds are extreamly slim.  One could also claim such statistices for other types of lighting and light patterns on the water  (as this thread illuminates) or even with emergency responder lighting. It's best everyone uses common sense while using their lights and be respectful of others. There are a lot of gray areas.

Answer A makes a lot of sense.  If they are a distraction while under way, turn them off until you get to your destination.  I can definitely see that they would enhance the lake experience while at anchor.  However, having them illuminated while under way smacks of "look at me".

The under water lights are  commonly referred to as swimming lights. That's why they are blue, so as not to attract bugs and hence fish. They are at the rear because that is where your boarding ladder is. Running with them on has no benefit but quite possibly some decrement as McGill pointed out.

I called the Marine Police as sugessted and this is the offical answer: No one on Lake Martin has received a ticket for operating their blue toon/underwater lights while underway. As long as the lights dont blink or flash and dont interfere with the red and green they are fine while underway. This includes underwater lights.

And yes I cant argue whether they serve a peurpose or not, But I like them. And shouldnt we all enjoy just ourselves while at the lake?

Sometimes cool is enough reason within itself.

I never said I was cool. I said somethimes cool is reason enough. As in something that is cool or neat.

This  Lake Martin forum appears to be less about lake topics, and more about 1 or 2 bored individuals with an opnion about anything and everything.

Can't imagine why more people dont advertize in this medium.

Thank you to those whose response helped with my question.

I don't understand why one would want them on when underway.  People on the boat can't see them, only others.  Suggests a "look at me" motive.

MrHodja:

Your last post asking why would anyone want the underwater lights on if only those away from the boat can see them suggest a look at me.

According to the Marine police, they are not illegal to operate and to your point, others would see them. If others see them then they know your location relative to their location. That goes in the night time safety column does it not?

As a side note, people inside the boat can enjoy the blue wake from the boat at night.

Good grief guys. One of the things I love about the lake is all the great people that we have meet and formed friendships. I think I will stick to meeting people on the water and not on a forum.

See ya on the water, I will be the one with all the unessary blue lights on.

The issue is that all that blue light tends to drown out the navigation lights. News flash, experienced night boaters use the Navy lights on your boat to determine not only location but course (direction).

Lifer,

I am pretty sure I qualify as an experienced boater. Not only have I navigated the Lake for more than 20 years without incident, for 10+ years I did the same in the Abaco's Bahamas. If we cant get their by boat then I also have thousands of hours "navigating" & flying aircraft. I can fly you anywhere in the world and land safely with less than 1 mile visibilty and 100' ceiling.

My point is, I am not some weekend warrior that is on the lake just driving around with no regard or understanding. Its also not hard to beileve that some aftermarket added lights done inproperly could cause the issues you speak of.

I cant imagine that large corporations like Brunswhick would design, approve, install and market additional lighting options that canceled out the effectiveness of night time navigation lights. That would open themselves up for huge liability.

This entire thread started with a simple question. What is the law? If you didnt know, which apparently you didn't then you have nothing add in terms of knowing the law only your insults about my experience and the type person you think I am. ,

My advice, if you see a moving blue object and you cant determin the direction of travel, make a 180 degree turn away and create seperation.

I personally have not had any issue with appraching vessels with blue lights and the ability to detremine their direction of travel. However as stated earlier the docking lights are an entirely different situation. I will also add that most boats that I have encountered with them on tend to be older drivers who dont even reconize that their on.

Maybe as we get older and are not able to distinguish navigation lights or notice the docking lights on your boat activated, that one should consider they have become too experienced as a boater and get it to the dock by sun down.

Like I stated in my second post of this thread. Its not about being cool or look at me. It about enjoying something your passionate about and buying what fits your taste. If we only did things nessasary on the lake : Why would anyone buy a boat that goes faster than 20mph?

Why would anyone care about the color of their boat? As one poster stated, the passengers cant see it so it must be look at me.

Cheers and enjoy this season on this wonderful Lake. Take joy in that fact the each boater on this lake, lives in a country that affords them the right to express their individuality in what they purchase and enjoy.

Hope to see you on the lake this Summer, I'll be the one pointing and telling my wife how I want lights like those. If your place is in the Bluecreek area then I'm just around the corner from you. Leadawg,

Yes, I think there is a couple of them on here that only look forward to next years tomato crops. I am very conservative in my everyday life and very much run under the radar. However when I am at the lake I do like the radio a little louder and do like things just simply because their fun, neat or yes even cool. My favorite saying is " it aint for everybody but it works for me" certainly apllies.

How a question about the legality of blue accent lights got comments like "I am an unexperienced boater", "look at me" or "disregard for other boaters" and my favorite " they are not nessasary" blows me away. I think when they are not checking the tomato's they are trolling and waiting to pounce on anyone that dosen't think just like them. Oh well, its a big lake with plenty of wonderful people who enjoy all that it has to offer. And yes, some of them do it with their LEGAL blue lights on.

Do you think I should get an opinon from them about wakeboard boats?  That should really get them going............

Ulysses E. McGiill

RVR600 is certainly very low visibilty. With the WAAS approaches now or LPV as labeled on the Jep approach plates, it's all about runway enviroment. If I get a few runway lights or the papi's, were home.

I would be glad to meet up this season and lets open them up. Win or loose that sounds like fun.

Ill bet if we met we probably get along just fine. I certainly like the partying from one end of the lake to the other.

A man I worked with in the Pentagon back in the 70s flew first for the RAF then the Army Air Corps in WW II.  He used to tell me the two most useless things to a pilot are the air above him or her, and the runway behind them.  He also told of flying through some German mountains one night in a C-47 during some really bad weather and suddenly found himself piloting an inverted Gooney Bird!  Since he was around to tell the story he must have figured out how to right his aircraft.....

I've got 3 billy goats that I need to get rid of. Maybe its time for another gathering at the chicken auction. Will they sell goats?

I only went to one back before the tornado hit and I came away with the impression that they would auction off just about anything...

Dang, do I have to go back to DC?  Much more entertaining here....well, at least wholesome entertainment, lol!

Yeah, get back to DC. I'm heading to Hawaii for a week. In mid March the warm weather will start rolling in and we can get the summer started. Keep practicing the twerk, BF; should be entertaining. We need to get some of the ladies on board, so you will be the Twerk chairman in charge of recruitment.....Get on it!

Will do...but I guess I need to practice my "wholesome" twerk..not the easiest thing to do...

I'm still trying to unsee the twerking vision....with or without the dreaded wrap around.
